22R Issues

having some issues with my truck, not too sure what they could be either... its abare bones and has a carb... anyways... the truck starts up fine in the morning, no problem, idles normally..... well when it warms up is when it has problems..... after i have been driving awhile, itsl oud, as in its revving way higher at idle than it should.... the timing is set correctly, not sure on what the idle rpm is when its acting up, when cold, its at about 700-800 rpm.... also seems liek the cold start system is backwards...... i dont have a tachometer.... all of the smog equipment is in place and supposedly in working condition (never tested it though) i need to smog it soon..... the engine diesels when tis shut off, and not a quick burble either, it tries to run for a good 5 seconds of hiccups...

if its dieseling it sounds like your fuel cut solenoid isn't working right. also if its idling high after driving, does it kick down if you slap the gas? choke might be not working right

it has been warm here lately, not outrageously hot though... around 80-90 degrees.....

i do have a yota carb on my truck, the timing is set at 5* eventhough i know it is supposed t obe set @ 0* with both lines going to the distributor plugged

as far as the fuel cut solenoid goes... not sure if thats the culprit or not... according to my fsm, it could be any number of things..... but the fsm trys to pinpoint 1 thing for troubleshooting, not several things together.... so human experience would help out more than the book, possibly....

ok jsut did a little mreo reading then loked up a picture kyle posted awhiel ago for me from 4x4wire i beleive... one day i thought it was idling ungodishly high and i tried t oadjsut the idle speed screw... tis possible this is so screwed up right now that it is causing my problem... in my fsm it says this could be an issue......

this next one is pretty unrealated... but my cold idle screw is all the way tight and it still idles very low at startup......

sounds to me like the secondary throttle plate is sticking open.

ok did some more work on it.... seemed like the cam jumped 2 teeth again... fixed that.... runs smoother, but still have the issue of idling way too high! engine running @ 2k all the time is bad!

i have another carb in my garage, but its wires were chopped off, and its internals seem to be a lot tighter.... im wondering about the choke and all that as was previously mentioned... the gas does not back of if you blip the throttle, it always returns to about 2k rpm.... heard something new the otehr day while driving.... when in 4th or 5th @ WOT there is a knocking sound, or a metal clanking.... hopefully it was just something resonating, but if i backed off the gas, it would go away......

sure your timing is supposed to be set to 0*? from what i remember, 20R and 22R should be 8* BTDC. until i bought a timing light last week, it turns out i had been running with nearly 20* of advance(block was decked and threw the timing off) and it ran fine...other than some pinging at WOT...

ok update.. it runs smoother now... timing is a little bit advanced and power seems good... the knock, whatever it was, went away...

when its cold, it idles at 700 rpm which is ok... however when its warm, its at least back up to 1500 rpm... i know that isnt right.....

ok... heres another twist.....

sometimes, it just happens to idle fine... where it should.... but 90% of the time, it idles way too high... around 1500 rpm

here's a shot in the dark, but have you checked your return spring? mine was loose from my monkey fabbed throttle cable and sometimes wasn't snapping back all the way. if it's idling way too high when warm, pop the hood, and pull the linkage arm back(opposite that you would if you were giving it throttle). if the spring is the problem, it'll idle down

i did look at the little spring... it seemed to be ok.... whenver the vehicle is cold, it doesnt have the problem.. so testing it in ideal conditions in the garage never works.... also, it still diesels almost anytime i turn it off, but not all the time.....
