2000 4Runner 60000 mile maintenance
Hi,
I just purchased a 2000 4Runner LTD with 58000 miles. I would like to know what maintenance I need to do to the vehicle at 60,000 miles.
Thanks.

Hey,
I don't know if this is exact for your 2002, but for my 97 it is. It's cumulative too, so the things you do at 60k include everything else (stuff you would do at 3k, 7.5k, 15k & 30k.

Hope it helps.

Well let me estimate it for you.
60,000 mile service - 339.95
Replace Timing Belt - 249.95*
Install New Drive Belts (optional) - 45.00 ( no labor )
Replace Thermostat - 50.00
*inspect Water Pump

Thanks for your post.
But according to the 2000 4Runner Manual the timing belt replacement is supposed to be done at 90000 miles. Is the Manual incorrect?

Yes the manual is correct. Bad thing is, I dont think the water pump can make it 90,000 miles
Dealers all still say replace it at 60,000. And even I am going to still replace mine at 60k.

My wife just had the oil and filter change done at Gatorland Toyota this morning. They also did a 19 point inspection. She asked them about the timing belt and they said pre 1999 4Runnners needed this done at 60K. Toyota has changed the timing belt material and now it should go over 100K miles. So the timimg belt replacement can be safely done at 90K miles.
Guess I need to make sure the water pump does not die before that. Is it easy to check the water pump when getting an oil change?
Jay, since you are a certified Toyata Tech, may be you can tell me what exactly is this 19 point inspection that Toyota dealers do?
Thanks for your advise.

19 point inspection....
I assume this includes inspecting brakes, steering suspension, exhaust systems...etc. etc...
these are all things any GOOD technician will do on each and every vehicle.

Didnt they give you a list of things they were gonna look at?
Im not sure... The water pump is mostly hidden behind the timing cover.

I can vouch that 2 of the Toyota Dealerships in Texas recommended for 1999 and newer 4Runners don't require a timing belt change until 90k due to the timing belt material improvement.
I bought the timing belt anyways since I plan to keep the car past 90k and I got offered a good price. The timing belt seems beefy (wider and stronger).

The runner I just bought this summer had a sticker on the Timing Cover that the belt was changed at 64,000 miles. I wonder if I can assume it will go 90,000 more miles now with a new belt??
Have no idea about the condition of the water pump. I've got 73,000 now. I'm going to do most of the rest of the 60,000 mile maintenance inspection since I don't know what else they did, other than the timing belt. Better safe than sorry.

Pre-99 3rd gen 4Runners will need the 60k timing belt change.
The water pump should be replaced as well.
J
btw, I'm going through the same myself with my 99.
