YotatechTour '06 - SoCal
*NOTICE* : 8/7/06 MEETING PLACE CHANGE - The meeting place has been changed to the Discovery Center at 8:00AM. Please be sure to make a note of this new information.
Date: August 18-20, 2006
Location: Big Bear, California
All attendees will be doing Gold Mountain for the filming portion of the event on Saturday. If you are interesting in being in the Yotatech Tour DvD, please make sure to be present at 8am at the Discovery Center. Once we clear Gold Mountain the group will split into two groups; John Bull for the hard guys and White Mountain for the medium guys. We'll all regroup at dinner with everyone else (TTORA) and open up for options on a night run. Sunday will be a free for all with TTORA.

Easy Trails:
Individual Run Information:
Prerunner / Stock Run: Geared toward Prerunners and stock 4x4s, this is a great run for the new comer or those just looking for a nice time in one of the most beautiful mountain areas in Sothern California. This run will be a tour of Holcomb Valley and the surrounding points of interest. Damage of any kind is very unlikely. The San Bernardino Mountains have a rich history and this will be presented as we visit the mines, town sites and other interesting or scenic stops along the way. A great way to introduce you and your family to the back county in the San Bernardino National Forest and to learn of its many links to the lands below. It will also be a great way to escape the summer heat by having a relaxing time in the mountains! Some stops will require short walks to view the sites. Appropriate shoes and attire are recommended.
Stock / Modified 4x4 Mild Run: This run will cover trails such as Gold Mountain and White Mtn. These trails will include rocky hill climbs, small rock gardens and loose dirt. Body damage on these trails is not likely, however rock sliders are recommended. 4x4 required for these runs. Additionally, a rear locker and off-road tires are required for the White Mtn trail run.
Lifted and Locked Hard Run: This run will cover such trails as John Bull and Holcomb Creek. These trails are very challenging and cover steep, rocky, off-camber terrain. Minimum requirements of 33” tires and one locker. Rock sliders and/or body armor are also recommended. Body damage is possible on these trails.
Vehicle Requirements:
Open to all Prerunners and 4x4s. All vehicles should have a tow strap, at least 1 tow hook (stock ones OK), a fire extinguisher, a first aid kit, a fully working spare tire and tools to change it. A CB radio is highly recommended for communications on the trail.
Fees:
In theory at least, you'll need an Adventure Pass. Adventure Passes are good for four local National Forests, Angeles, San Bernardino, Cleveland and Los Padres. They are required if you stop your vehicle and participate in any form of recreation (i.e. any stopping). Complete details including how and where to purchase the passes can be found at www.fsadventurepass.org.
Meeting Place & Time:
August 19th, 2006 - Discovery Center @ 8AM Sharp. Be sure to be gassed up and ready to go as there isn't a nearby gas station to the meeting place. Also be sure to have plenty of food (lunch) and water. If you have any questions about things you should bring with you, arrive a bit early and ask any of the staff.
Directions to Discovery Center:
From the Interstate 10 East or West, exit on Orange Street in Redlands. Turn North onto Orange Street and then right onto Lagonia Street (CA-38). Proceed on Highway 38 up the mountain and to Big Bear City turning left onto Big Bear Boulevard. Proceed West to Stanfield Cutoff and turn right (North), crossing the lake to North Shore Drive turning left at this T-intersection. Proceed 1-½ miles to the entrance of the Big Bear Discovery Center.

* -LEFT on highway 38 at first intersection
* -LEFT on Poloque Canyon Rd (before discovery center)
* -RIGHT at TTORA sign (will be arrow), continue to 3N16
* -RIGHT on 3N16

Remember: There is absolutely no drinking on the trail!
Please remember that a Forest Adventure pass is required for any parked vehicle. The Discovery Center is open from 8am to 6pm daily and can be reached at 909-382-2790. So, be sure to make a pit stop there on your way to camp if you don't have your Adventure Pass. The rangers do periodically check for these and you will be cited if you are caught without one.

If you are going to operate a stove or fuel lantern, you will need a Fire Permit. This permit is good for stoves, fuel lanterns or campfires (which are not allowed right now anyway). Visit a ranger station; show your drivers license to a ranger & they can issue you a permit after you have reviewed the precautions & fire safety laws. Campfire permit is valid from the date issued until the end of the calendar year. It may be used in any National Forest in Northern California or in the Sierra Nevada. The odds are that no matter where you are coming from, you'll pass a Ranger Station.

haha, only kidding. In all seriousness, if someone has a big back yard and BBQ we could do it at someone's house or if the group would rather meet at a restaurant that would be great too. It might be a good idea to have a backup restaurant just incase the weather is bad also. Either way it would be a great opporunity for everyone to be on the same page about what was going to happen the following two days as far as the shooting schedule. Then there is the question on what trails we are going to hit? You guys know all the best places, so post em up and we will all decide as a group where we end up. Let's hear it guys!

Sure, I'll cook for everyone. Assuming everyone wants cereal. 
Well y'all? I think Big Bear or Miller Jeep Trail would be a nice SoCal trail to show off for the DVD (Both have 2wd friendly areaa there or close by), but am up for anything. I'd love to host a BBQ, but my backyard isn't even landscaped yet.
Austin, that's July 15? If so, a lot of SoCal people will be at the Mammoth trip until the 17.

Where exactly will you be? I will be taking my time getting up to WA as I want to take at least some parts of Route 1. My dad was out there last summer and was raving about it. Thanks for the offer to crash! I may just take you up on that offer depending on where you are going to be and how far off-course it is. I won't need a couch as I will be converting my Excursion into a pseudo-RV for the trip but if you have access to a power outlet that could come in quite handy!

Big Bear could be either a day trip or camping . Last time I went there it was just for the day. Others I know have camped there. You'll be here over a weekend so that's good for the 9-5 crowd.
Ohh man, I just checked TTORA - they're planning their Big Bear run for that same weekend! Hm, not sure if that's good for you or not, Austin. More Yotas, but the focus is Yotatech.

Having ttora there is no problem at all, we could actually talk about how clubs tend to come together when forming trips etc. Thats the beauty of film making, you get to make whatever you want!

There are lots of camp grounds and also lots of open areas that are up for first come first serve. I guess it comes down to how many utilities you will need. Usually we go rustic with no facilities at all and use a bathroom while out during the day if needed.
Not sure if they have a web site. Hopefully someone will chime in with some info on that.

No-one is stepping up to the plate for hosting the BBQ. I could prolly do it, but most of the guys in this thread are down south of SoCal (eg SD) whereas I'm 45mins north of LA, so I guess that won't help. Sorry.

I guess I don't understand the idea of this trip. I am a bit slow. I thought it was just another wheeling trip that Mr. Turbodale just happened to be along on to do some videoing of. Is this not the case? Is the BBQ just one of the evening dinners that needs to be organized and sort of hosted if you will?
