Because that is one of the ways the beetles are getting transported great distances and having such a big impact in such a short time. Typically, they take generations to move any kind of distance at all.

If the tree was completely dead when it was cut down " which is the wood you want as firewood anyways" the beetles have done ther damage and have been long gone. You can also knock the bark off and no beetles will be traveling with you for sure.

If the tree was STANDING I agree with you, but the beetle's preferred habitat is actually blown down timber, so if you THOUGHT the tree was dead because it was lying down, it could very well be infested.

The thing is - why risk it? Bring pallets or other guaranteed beetle-free wood, or get it locally - there's no reason to potentially infest another area.

TWO WEEKS AWAY

I haven't been this excited for a wheeling trip in a long time. I have a ton I need to get done this weekend on the 4Runner plus install some new goodies I bought this week (ARP knuckle and hub studs, Longfield Cromo hub gears, TG Creeper Joint Shackle Mounts).

I figured the Hardcore schedule would be
Holy Cross - Friday (4-6 rigs so far)
Carnage - Saturday (8 rigs so far)
Iron Chest - Saturday night (??? # of rigs)
Chinamans - Sunday (20 rigs)

In years past, people had to sign up for trail runs each day. I'm trying something different. People will have to talk to other people and ask them what they drive and what kind of trails they want to run.

I don't mind running Chinamans or Holy Cross with other runs that aren't considered "Hardcore". The only exception will be BV Carnage. Locked F&R, and 35's are pretty much manditory for that trail.

I'm open to any suggestions to the current trail and rig signup. Thanks for the thoughts Issac!
Personally, I've found that much more than 4-6 rigs starts to lose it's fun factor. I'd be interested in taking a smaller group on an exploration of all the Antero massif / Baldwin gulch area trails (i.e. Antero, Brown's lake, White Mountain, Baldwin Lake, Boulder Mtn.) It would need to be a smallish group up for a fairly long day, but we would explore all of the trails from the Antero trailhead, along with tagging the top of Antero (weather permitting).

I'd also like to do a similar day of Iron Chest & Grizzly Lake combined. Again, long day, fairly tough, moving quick, exploration. Focus would be on seeing, instead of playing.

Anyone else of a similar mind?

Anyone planning on heading down from Fort Collins area on Friday that wants to meet up for the drive? Having never been to this area, it would be nice to follow someone. Especially, if everyone wants to make sure the raffle bumper actually makes it down.

Just a comment on Iron Chest. You may want to run this, as it may be one of the last times you can. It is not a system route, never has been, and under the OHV rule officially doesn't exist. You know what that means.

Thanks for the heads up. I really hope to run this trail the Saturday night of the Jambo (depends on how Carnage treats us )

Sounds like a fun day of wheeling! I bet there will be somebody else that will enjoy that set of trails. You thinking about making it to the Jambo?

Google Map from Fort Collins to the approximate area we are camping

Aaron,
What trails would you recommend that are moderate?
Open/open, single case, 4.10, ~4" lift, 32" MTRs.
I went up to Barbour Fork on saturday and the 4runner did great.
I picked the hardest lines I could see(not a hard trail), and I don't think I ever picked up a tire.

Nice picture! I like the look of that.

I would recommend Wheeler Lake. It's a little ways away from BV but a great trail. You will have no problems on it but will challenge you. Great lake at the top with excellent views.

I would also recommend Grizzly Lake (although I've never ran it). Some of the Rockfrogs ran it last week and several more plan on running it along with IronChest this weekend. I'll let you know what they think of it.

I also believe you could make Chinamans with your setup. You would have to be very careful on the squeeze (both in and out) and on the V-notch (no bypass). We will have several rigs with winches so we can winch you up V-notch if need be. That's not a problem.

Check out this trip report. It's basically what 86Orignal was talking about running. Looks like a great trip also!

I wouldn't worry too much about getting 500 miles on it before the trip. I installed mine and drove the 4Runner onto a trailer and headed to Moab. I broke them and pretty much the gears in the 7 days I was there.

I'd make sure to change the diff fluid after the trip though!

You'll love having that extra traction in the rear.

So, are you guys for sure camping off of CR-315? The TTora thread mentions 305. Just want to make sure since it will likely be dark or close to it by the time I am there.

I will have one other 4runner in my group. He is built on 37" Iroks. Locked at both ends, but running stock birfs.

From the map to looks like where CR-315 and CR-305 meet up, but the shortest way there would be to take CR-315 off the highway.

Hey Scotty did you get my PM?

I'll make sure that I post up the exact location on Thursday after Poorboyota finds a spot and calls me. It will be either off of 305 or 315. I'll make sure to have something obvious at the correct turnoff as well and some signage along the way. I think poorboyota said he bought some glow sticks.

Sounds good about the other rig. I'll add him to the list!
