1st of all ... Much Thanx to everyone !
I am now in the process of going back to a" starting point", checking wire harness ,pulled alternator , connectors , grounds , plugs , wires , checked valve lash , timing, compression , all of it.
I put a new motor in this truck several years ago had no problems with it till this past winter
The beast has been re-geared with detroit lockers and centerforce clutch ,85 solid front , with racks it's my firewood hauler. Can't give up on it
I've stated before "Electrics " not one of my strong points SO I THANK ALL FOR THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE !

Charge light relay behind passenger kick panel on 83 ..... the problem or at least part of it
There's a lot of posts on other sights relating to "charge light relay malfunction "gauge light not coming on / light staying on AND its relationship to the Reg & Alt
if so I have a lot of company in this nightmare
my charge light was staying on even while alt is charging at 14.20V
I took off parking break and the charge light turned off
now when turning on Ign and starting motor, charge light doesn't come on at all

Haven't herd of a charge light relay, at least not on 1986 22RE.
IF charge light comes on when your alt output is between 13.5 and 15.1V, then either:
1) Regulator is bad- thinks it's not doing a good job when it is., OR
2) Bad diode on gage/combo meter/dash cluster circuit causing brake error to also indicate charge error.

Need to know whether your charging circuit remained that of an 83 or updated to that of an 85.

UPDATE , As I said I went back to a starting point then after going through all that...no change BUT since I had a missing problem until alternator kicks in I got a very wild hair and decided to upgrade my stock carb to a Weber 38 . If it made no difference I could still use it on my other trucks. Any way long story short , changed out stock for Weber 38 and I'll be darn the charging /missing issue is now gone !
Took all emissions off, the weber works fine may need a little jetting adjust for up here but THE ORIGINAL PROBLEM IS GONE !
*the chicken or the egg thang ....Thanks All !

Good for you, I'm glad you found the problem, or did you? I have a gut feeling that your problem wasn't the carb but something to do with all the emissions you removed.

Yeah it's nice to have it run like the lil'beast it is AGAIN !!!
No doubt NY, Removing the emissions , switches , sensors, etc sure reduces the amount of "stuff" that side of the motor...kinda like frying bacon !
