new engine, same old problem
i just spent the last 2 days doing an engine swap. i have a 1987 4runner with the 22re and i put a 22re from a 91 pickup into it. after running it for about 5 mins, the exhaust started really smoking as though there was coolant in the oil and there was in fact the infamous milkshake on the dipstick. the engine sounds like its running super smooth and the compression in all 4 cylinders is right on 150. is there anything else other than a headgasket that would cause this?

yes, coolant in the oil could be coming from a timing chain that has broken the guide and chewed a hole into the water pump impeller housing. It could also be water and or condensation that was in the engine that you swapped over. It could also be from a blown head gasket. You will need to do a oil change and monitor your oil real close for foaming and any dairy queen action or pull the valve cover and peek down inside the timing case for any wear on the drivers side of the timing case and a big chunk of it being broken off. I hope for you that its just condensation, but for the 22re id bet its a hole worn in the timing case from the chain.

For everyone that has had the timing cover worn through, like me. I am told by some that the rods and main are done, regardless of miles driven in that condition, others say it will be ok. My question is this, how many miles have you driven since repairs to the timing cover? Any lower end trouble?

thanks guys. it turns out that i had some hoses in the wrong spot or something. beer + engine swap is not a good idea... LOL. shes up and running now though
