Starter Short Blunder...HELP!

JB 91 Runner 3.0
Hey all,
well I screwed up...replaced my starter and the positive was touching the body of it.
put the battery cables back on for a sec and heard what sounded like my fuel pump on but a little louder. Did it again for a sec and heard it again and saw just a bit of smoke come from under the rig in the vicinity of the tank.
Figured out the reason, bent the cable down so to not touch the starter. Lights, interior everything seems to be working. All fuses checked and fine. Won't crank though. I did replace the new starter just in case I fried it.
anybody have advice, or a list of checks I should Do?
Thanks in advance, JB

So your changing a starter without disconnecting the negative battery terminal !!

Any special reason ??

When you say it won`t crank did you check starter #2 before installing ??Rebuild quality any more is doubtful .

While the lug was arcing against the starter how much of the lug burnt off ??

Getting a good solid contact on the starter ?? Did the cable open some place that you didn`t notice.??

Time to break out the meter !!

Check the battery is fully charged and undamaged

Off work and getting ready to dig in...

Answer to first..yes I dised the neg. The original positive was in bad shape so I replaced it.
i stupidly didn't put a bend in the end so it contacted...
new cable is fine with 0 arc damage..will check grounds and all fuses again.

As the battery cable to the starter has no circuit protection !!

While it has no protection it never hurts to test the fuses with your Meter .

Check the ground cable one of those may have suffered damage if it was already in poor shape.

Unless you all ready charged the battery it might be discharged enough to not crank the starter
