battery light and brake light on

1991 toyota 4x4 22re

Well my brake light is on and battery light is on at the same time, also the voltage is low. I checked the fuses and this has been going on for a few weeks.

Alt.

Agreed. That is your Toyota truck telling you your alternator (or wiring to it) is dead. Check that FIRST!

This happened to me on my '95 runner and it turned out i hadn't tightened the alternator bolt so the belt was slipping half the time. Re-tensioned the belt and cranked down on the bolt and no more problems.

Well I checked it and its on its last leg cause I removed the battery and put in a spare that was new and it did the same thing, also I removed the battery while it was running and it died when it had high beams, brakes, flashers, wipers all on.

Battery

Truthfully IT IS your Toyota truck, telling you it IS your alternator. Take it out, or not, and test it ! Just my guess !

Had same issues on my 90 runner. It has a volt meter as well and showed alt was not putting out, but then a few miles down the road, it started working fine again. Been doing this every day for the past month. I ordered a brush and holder asy. for the alternator from the toyota place and just installed it. The old one was worn out compared to the new. I have not tested it yet because my intake busted all up taking it out. 30 min job has now turned into an intake mod job.

Its your alternator. While its running tap on it with something and it might start charging again. You can just replace the internal brushes to fix the problem. DON'T BUY A NEW ALT. ESPECIALLY FROM KRAGEN

Inexpensive to repair:

And X2 on repair vs. replace.

This is a good thread! What about upgrading at the same time? I know that Mr. Alternator and a rewound alternator are not a good way to go, but Alterstart in Texas is selling a 160amp (75amps at idle) with a two year warranty and print out of the bench test for $229. Thoughts?

Alternator is bad or something else is wrong with your charging system.

Hey buddy, If you replaced your alt with a new one and it is still doing it then it sounds like you need to check your connector that plugs into the back of the alt, Mine did the same thing and i wrote it off as being the alternator, after spending $130 on a new one only to find out it was still there i realized that 1 of the wires that goes into the plug that plugs into the alt had pulled out of the plastic plug itself. It was an easy fix but it happened again later on so i ended up putting the wire back in the plug again but this time i used a few zip ties around the wires going into the plug to keep the wires from getting jar'd around during normal engine operation etc...it hasnt let me down yet. So i suggest trying that, examine the plug real good make sure your connections are not packed with corrosion as well. Hope that helps bud...

I had the same problem with mine, sprayed the plug with electronic cleaner and hit it with a wrench a couple times, and volts came up and works fine now

Wrenches are for bolts and nuts, hammers are for hitting stuff.
