'89 4x4 intermittent starting issues (relay?)

Hey guys,

I've been having an intermittent problem with starting my 4-cylinder 4x4 pickup. From what I've read, it sounds like the starter relay needs to be replaced since I know it isn't the starter itself.

What I'm looking for is the location of the starter relay. The junction box behind the battery didn't contain it, nor did the panel on the driver's side in the cab have the relay in it.

Here are the symptoms, if you're curious. If I turn off my truck after driving for an extended period, I'm unable to start the truck again until it cools down sufficiently. When I turn the ignition, there is a single click and a quiet hum. I get power to my stereo, lights, etc..

Does anyone have any other ideas of what the problem could be?

Thanks in advance!

It could be the relay, or the clutch switch if not pushing clutch down far enough, also i can still be the starter. there is a contact in the starter that can go out or bad and then it will start sometimes and just click other times. my guess is the starter. you can clean the contacts, look at my build thread for the part where i take the starter apart and clean the contacts.

Thanks c0ugar, I'll look into that. I should have mentioned that I have an automatic transmission. Also I had a warranty on the starter and replaced it for free, but the problem persists.

sounds like a fuel pump problem to me. test the fuel pressure to see how strong your pump is

thats good. So if you got a replacement starter and it is still clicking the i thinks it the relay. I am pretty sure mines in the driverside kick panel.

I have an '88. check the ground under the starter relay on the right hand fender. should be round. look for corrosion and clean real well, perhaps some aluminum wire grease (used by electricians) to lube the retaining bolt before tightening into place.

If all else fails wire in a momentary push me switch to the starter solinoid lead in parallel with the current one. So when the key does not roll it, you can flick the swicth to start.
