actually, i believe most cruisers are available with front and rear e-lockers rather than just a limited slip

about a week or two ago, i saw a black 70 series 2 door driving through my town. i'd kill to be able to legally drive one in this country

Did Toyota import the 2.4 turbo diesel 2nd gen into Canada? I'd love to get hold of a rusty front clip.

The diesels were only in Canada in the 80s. There is two companies importing toyotas from japan. Check this one out, it's right handdrive but has a lot of factory goodies. I drover by there to check it out myself. It has the altimeter etc. above the windshield. Very nice.

Hold on, soon enough D-4D new-gen diesel technology will be available here (click on Home/New Cars/Diesel Zone). Well, almost everywhere in America. It might not become available in CA or other states adopting the onerous new CA emissions regs discussed in this thread.

I drove an FZJ-75 just last month, brought into the US from Canada and it was a dream. The engine was not turbo-charged so it was undoubtedly doggy off the line but the low end torque was great! It was quiter at driving speeds than my 98 Taco but it still had the wonderful throaty sound of a diesel at idle.

The FZJ series is about the most capable 4X4 on the roads so why not go with it? I am trying to import the "troop carrier" as we speak, i'll keep you all posted.

Wow!

Jedi can you run a step by step process on how you imported a Canada vehicle into the US? FZJ-75 are soooo sweet.

I'd love a diesel tacoma. Bad

Why? Aside from the issues of power, reliability and economy, there's BIO-DIESEL. The dream fuel for a tree-hugger like me. The best is if you used the reclaimed stuff...ahh...the faint smell of french fries where-ever you drive..

Diesel rocks - more torque, cleaner burning, longer life. Its a wonder Toyota, trying to really compete with the big three US pickups does not offer a diesel. A taco with a turbodiesel would be the greatest thing ever.

Those FJ-75 are sweeeeeeet vehicles

Hell yes! I don't know why they don't offer everyday vehicles in diesle in the U.S. They get such good mileage.

Yeah - thats the thing with these electric/hybrid cars - yeah, you get better gas mileage, good fro the environement etc etc. but when you add in the enrgy used to make the batteries, charge them, and the disposal of the hazardous waste that they contain - the situation become less than ideal - that electricity and energy in those batteries has to come from somewhere- so instead of burning the fuel yourself, in your car, the way I see it is industry is burning the fuel for you to make the energy to charge the battery and to manufacture and dispose of it.......Hydrogen , while a long way away, is the fuel of the future and warrants intense investment as the rewards would be immense.

Just wondering what the market looks like, especially now that the jeep liberty is supposed to come out with a diesel for the US.
That would be a yes. Then I would like to run Biodiesel so that everyone would think I just ate a McDonalds.
I know toyota made a turbo-diesel for my truck which is an 86', just not in the U.S.
Here is a link to info on biodiesel and Rudolf Diesel the inventer.

I'll take what they're having!

A few things:

1st - A diesel electric hybrid is not a new idea and it should have been adapted to autos a long time ago. I understand why they weren't adatped til recently though. Heck, the railroads have been buying diesel electrics since the 40's and that is all they buy anymore.

2nd - Why would you want a Cummins or Caterpillar diesel over a Hino? Hino is the subsidiary (part of the Japanese kieretzu of Toyota, at least to my understanding) company for Toyota that makes their diesels and used to make their trucks! Build quality was better on those trucks than the ones made in USA (I might get flamed for that rather unpopular point of view). Hino knows their diesels and they are already proven the world over... except for the US where diesel fuel quality isn't good enough to meet emissions standards. I sincerely hope that Toyota doesn't make a deal with Cummins or otherwise but puts their own Hino engines in the eventual diesels they sell here.

3rd - Yes, I'd take a diesel from Toyota in a heartbeat! I'm deeply in love with the truck shown in 01Mossy Oak's picture. =) Once the 5VZ-FE in my T100 dies I'll most likely look to swapping in a diesel... granted I'll be waiting awhile, it's a Toyota engine!

Regards,
Joel

now if we could just get the diesel we have here in the states cleaned up like they have over sea's, and bring over some of their technology..... maybe then we'd have something people would like more....

I guess you haven't driven a modern diesel, the vw tdi only needs glowing at cold temps, and does so when you unlock the door. I was in Saskatoon Canada, and could start the thing with about a 5sec delay in minus 20C. The new toyota diesels in Europe and the rest of the world are right up there for quality. Nowadays they are not really noisy at all anymore.

Most 150 ton Haulpacks (dump trucks) and up all use diesel motors that provide power for electric motors at each wheel.

I think that 70 series p/u would crush that j##P concept called the "brute" right out of the box, and you wouldn't have to have the frame cut and lengthened and all those mods on the heap. Win, Win.

All Toyota would have to do to get me to sign my soul over.... Cruiser class frame, solid axles, factory lockers, Diesel, and a removable hard top. Oh yeah I might want A/C for AZ summer.

I checked out the Greasecar webpage and it is way cool. How funny would it be to roll into Costco and pick up 20 gallons of Veggie oil for 50c ea then proceed to the parking lot and fill up the truck. I bet there would be a lot of funny looks!

The possibilities are endless, after those deep fried fish tacos in camp, you could dump the oil in the tank and off you go

i would love a turbo diesel....all that low RPM torque would be great...if yota put out a v6 TD i would defintly be down for getting it...If they give the new FJ cruiser a TD option with a 6-speed id get that in a heartbeat...that torque would be lots of fun..have you ever seen superdutys take off?? My dad friend has a SD with a chip in it and just because of that chip it makes like 675 ft\lbs of torque...you smash that thing getting on the highway and you might as well get thrown out the back window
