Straight axle yota WTB

I'm looking for an old toy to make a crawler and something else to drive while my big truck's down. I don't know the differences between the old trucks. Are there any specific years that are better suspension wise and more reliable. Also what engine options would i have? I have an extra set of 5.29's for an 8" will they fit in old toyotas?

You want one that is already done or something you can build?

I'ld take a clean stocker, but i've seen some nicely done ones for a good price. I'm looking to spend under 3K initially, whether a stocker and then buy wheels, tires, and a lift, or one already lifted with a few mods. Pretty much a cheap reliable truck that I don't have to be worried about getting stranded in (the engine I mean).

Here's one that's got a pretty good start:

http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=20154.0

If you "shop" arond a bit you can get ALOT more for your money then if you were to build something up. Last month I started looking for a truck(toyota of course lol) that has got a good head start that I could play with harder(things changedthough, my $Runner isn't my DD any more). There's lots out there it just depends on what you want. Shop the Pirate board or Marlin's or a few or any of the "harder" boards and there is normally one deal on there.

Pre 1985 trucks are all 22R or 20R

Some 1985's have 22RE's. IMO the "ultimate" '85 is the SR5 extended cab 22RE - few and far between tho...

good luck finding a clean one!

I ended up buying an '87 because of the relative rarity of the EFI solid axle trucks. I looked for 6 months state wide and only came across a few BPOS, and a couple 85's that were priced in the $6500.00 to $8500.00 range. Nuthin in the mid range...

You would not like me then. The donor rig for the buggy I managed to find was an 85 SR5 extended cab EFI. It was actually fully optioned, auto too, sunroof. I have never actually seen another 85 truck like it. Too bad it looks kinda like this now:

I thought that too at first (was gonna replace with a W56), but now I have an inchworm adapter ready to go on the auto tranny. Oddly it is 1 of 3 vehicles I own and 1 of 5 that I have ever owned and it is the only auto tranny out of all of them...

So what's the last straight axle then? Also what side diffs do the 80's have? Are they smaller than an 8"? I've found a pretty clean 83 with a blown motor. I was thinking of doing that and getting a nice new engine. I have found some nice clean mildy done crawlers pretty cheap too.

'85 was the last of the solid axles, and they have passenger side 8" diffs.
