Ok I have posted about paint my 4runner awhile ago. I have been reading about some people rolling the rigs with rustoleum base enamel thinned out with mineral spirits so it almost like water. I was wondering if anyone on here has tryed this? And how well did it come out/hold up.Or if anyone hasent mabye some advice! My 4runner is going to be a mile offroader but still want it to look ok for just cruzing around town.

 

Plenty of people have done this. I didn't roll it, but I did spray it. All the prep was the same, but spraying was so much faster.

 

i just painted straight from the can and did a LOT of wetsanding. though after the tailgate i got impatient and sped up... you can tell.
people see the tailgate and dont believe its rattlecan, its so deep and shiny.

 

Ok well I tryed this lastnight with a quart of satin black enamel on an old fender. I thinned it out and rolled it on with a high density foam roller. Dident ture out like I wanted. But I think the satin is a hard color to work with! Im going to try a gloss black next. Im trying this on some old fenders before I go ahead on the runner.

 

ok little update! I sanded off all the satin black off and rolled on some gloss black today! The gloss black truned out way better! I thinned it out to about a 50/50 mixture with mineral spirits. I only did one coat today but I will get around to more later. It came out real nice almost like glass with very min.. orange peal. After I get about 3-4 more coats on and wet sand and buff it up I will post a pic

 

what grit of sandpaper are you prepping with? it can have a big effect on final product you should be using at least 600.

 

yeah I used 600 to prep! Im on my third coat right now with the gloss black and it has tured out fairly well! Just have to wet sand my next few coats and buff it.

 

I have done both rolled, and sprayed it on with a gun spraying was faster with out having to wet sand like I did with the truck. but the next time I paint a truck I am rolling 4 thick
un thinned coats then wet sand it and spray it one or two times for the finish coat.

I sprayed 5 coats and it was just not thick enough compared to the 5 coats I rolled on the truck.

you also have to be careful for about a month after painting with rustoleum until it cures fully or it can chip and crack easily.
