need help! CV boot fitment

I'm heading out tomorrow moring to get cv grease to put in to offset any grit, sand, etc. that got in during a tear of my outer CV boots (both) on the beach today. I called napa earlier and asked about boot kits for a temporary "get home" fix, where i could clean it out and put new boots on w/o having to dissemble everything. Anyway they said they didn't have anything compatible with a 4th gen runner. My question is, are the outter cv boots the same size across 4th and 3rd gens? 2nd and 3rd gens? etc. I'm going out now to measure and do some cleanup prep for the morning.

some back story for anyone who's curious.
I'm stuck on Martha's Vineyard with both outter CV Boots torn while on beach. I had to drive about 1.5 miles back on sand to get to somewhere to fix them, so I'm not about to drive the 330 odd miles home with sand and nexty to no grease in the cv's. I have learned a lesson about disconnecting the front sway bar on a fourth gen though (yes I'm a dumbass ) bc the first time it happened off sand and close to home. The second :pat: (swaybar now tied up) on a crazy, frantic, beach run, trying to make the big car ferry b/c the Chappy ferry was out of action. It's really a long story that I'll elaborate on at some point if anyone is interested.

meaure your bootsl, pretty please?

Can anyone with a 3rd gen and 2nd gen mesure the diameter of the outer CV axel boot?

I'm assuming the half shafts are the same diameter between 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gens. As i look at the mess of my boots I realized b/c of the duct tape engineering that held up so well for the 2 days on the beach, the driver's-side boot is now in 3 peices, prolly has next to no grease, and some sand in it.. I'm thinking it would be best to get new boots now. I'm guessing the boots are the same accross gens but who knows. I nned some help pretty quickly b/c my ferry is tomorrow at 2:45pm (moved already three times, which is the last straw) going first thing in the morning I'll just have enough time to pack and fix the issue before driving 7.5 hrs. home. Thank you all.

measured

from what I can tell, sans caliper, the outer boot where it meets the joint is 4 1/4" to 4 3/8" od and about 4.5 inched long or so compressed. Please can anyone measure their either 2nd gen or 3rd gen and post the sizing. I've got to make a decision and get this tomorrow at 8am. Thank you!!

Boots, booty, & CV Joints for all

Anyone, anyone. Please measure or at least tell me in your experience if the 3rd gen front axel boots are the same size as the 4th gen?

Try posting this question (measurements) in the 2nd gen and third gen forums. Most of those guys don't read the 4th gen section.

2nd gen CV's are a TOTALLY different design.

Did you ask about Taco CV's - they should be exactly the same, but most part counter yahoos won't know to look it up that way.

I drove 2500 miles across the country on a torn CV. I think you'll be ok with 330 miles, or until you can fix it.

Bump..

PS - best ever reason for manual hubs BTW (yes, I know they're not easy/cheap to mod on the newer trucks)

I'll check on Taco CV boots. I know they have them for a '99 4runner at autozone.

background: they've been torn completly open (both outer) since last year around 7,000 miles with little to no greese. I'm going on vacation and will be driving pretty much entirely on sand for the next week. I feel it's a good idea to regrease and seal them up before I leave. I'm basically worried about getting sand in them and possibly destroying an axel and essentially ruining my vacation.

Check out Autozone and look for "Quick Boots" I wouldn't personally use them permanently, but they are a quick fix for that. You can put it on with the cv still on the vehicle if you can get to the boot. Get some degreaser or parts cleaner and hose the whole deal out to get as much sandy grease out as is possible. If you can't find any replacements, then get some grease and put it in then duct tape the heck out of it after cleaning.

the saga continues...

So Dorman Quick Boot Part 614-632 that fits a 2004 taco and a '99 4runner does NOT fit the 4th Gen Runners...

So my only option is a OEM replacement boot, I have the outer's on order, however I have a question: Do I have to pull the whole axel to get the outer boot on (including draining diff fluid and redoing the inner boot)? -OR- Can I slip the new boot over the splines at the hub-end of the axel?

I'm hoping the later is the case.

Exclamation update

Stealership doesn't stock CV boot kits for 2005 Runners, so I'll have them tomorrow. Now i'm on to replacing the outer boots with OEM ones and pulling the whole axel. Toyota Repair Manual was very usefull, however I've got a few questions:

outter CV joint takes regulare CV joint grease (black) as far as I can tell. Inner CV Joint takes a different grease... (white lithium based?) It isn't spec'd in the manual: Can anyone tell me what kind of grease to use on the inner front axel joints? Help!

Just get yourself a new CV and turn in the core if you want money back. Otherwise you should just put in a new CV and take that one with the busted boot, slap some new boots and grease on when you get the chance and use it as a trail spare.

I worked offroad with a utlity company, offroading my t-100 for 4 years with torn boots before they exploded. Never sweated it and I learned to drive off road in 2wd, really good.
