TPS placement

Hey guys, just got a new tps for my 85 4Runner 22re. I ordered it off 22re performance. I’m not sure if I’m mounting the tps correctly because I cant get the correct reading on my multimeter and the motor will surge when foot is pressed on the throttle. There are two cut outs on the butterfly inside the tps that look like the prongs on the throttle body should be inserted into. Are they supposed to go in those cut outs, or on the opposite flat side.

Flat to flat.

Put it on with the plug end facing more downward and rotate clockwise. You'll know it's making contact by the spring tension.

ok, so I did mount it correctly. I can’t for the life of me get the right readings on my multimeter still. I followed the marlin crawler instructions for the throttle stop screw and I have the correct feeler gauges. I’m stumped. The old tps wasn’t adjusted correctly either and it’s not the original to begin with. I figured the new Toyota made one would be a good replacement.

Do you have an original throttle body that points down at an angle and has the protrusion that meets the tps vertical? It's possible someone swapped it for a 2nd gen 22re throttle in which case you need the 89+ sensor..

When you're turning the tps and the throttle is closed do you feel it touch and the spring in the sensor start to resist?

it’s the original 1st year 22re tb. Yes, the tension is there when I begin to turn it. Everything looks and feels right. I just can’t get the multimeter to read anything correctly. I’ve tried a new digital meter and and old school analog meter.
