if the tranny is starting out in third ,then its probably not the throttle position sensor. i would try to get some other quotes on rebuilding the tranny. i doubt the torque converter is causing it to start in third, so thats probably not going to fix it either.

Transmission code 63... Will call Pat... Ok, code 63 is a bad #2 shift solenoid. He also said for that amount of money you could by a factory remanufactured transmission with a 1yr WARRANTY!! Tell your transmission dude to numb and grease the shaft next time he wants to break it off in you!!!

There is no way it is the torque converter? None of the symptoms sound like they have anything to do with it. If the converter was toast it would just not lock up. Unless you ripped all the fins off of the inside but, dare i say it, that is not hardly possible with a 3slo in front of it. I would however go ahead and change converters if you are going to rebuild the trans tho. I would personally start to change the solenoid, pull the pan, and look at what kind of debris you have in the bottom of the pan. If there are piles of metal, go buy a trans somewhere and send yours as a core, as major internal compeonents are most likely needing replaced. If there are piles of black goo crap, its the friction off the clutches, in this case you can just buy a full rebuild kit for a few hundred and have someone rebuild yours and save a little money. If the pan is pretty clean (no piles of anything) you can just replace the solenoid and cross your fingers. Don't forget to use a new pan gasket, and I would reuse the fluid that came out of it, just ran through a paint filter. I don't think i ever cought how many miles yours had on it. If it has over 150k i'd prob lean towards one of your rebuild options anyway.

Fellas, ladies... Its the #2 shift solenoid, not the convertor. Did you miss the part about Pat being a Toyota Master Mechanic? No offense meant, but the PCM and the rip off transmission shop and Pat are telling him the solenoid is the problem. He said he checked the fluid level and didnt know if it was original. Nothing about a fried smell or being really dark, so where is all the extra guessing coming from? OBD I and OBD II systems are there for diagnotics.

I agreed? I said it in no way sounded like the converter... I simply told him to look in his pan when changing the solenoid to see if he needed a rebuild, or that he might wanna rebuild either way if it has high miles... My last job was transmission mechanic for a decently big name trans shop.

not a wives tale ..seen it lots of times ... its a real easy way for a shop to get a tranny job out of a service. they recommend the fluid flush then send you on your way only to have you bring it back and say its slipping now or wont go . then BAM they sell you a new tranny . for an ungodly amount of money .

ID START WITH THE Solenoid

Sorry, text has no tone to it, wasn't meant to be an insult in any way. Not always the best at wording things correctly, or attempting to be condescending to anyone. Sorry as well about your current employment status, hopefully things will turn up in your favor soon. I trust Pat completely, he is super cautious when it comes to diagnosis, and begrudgingly gave me the trans flash code solution. My main focus was to not have Mr-4 get screwed over by a shop trying to get over on him. Again, I apologise if I stepped on any toes for simple fact that karma kicks in an tells you to pucker up later.

CAN ANYONE SUGGEST HOW to locate a solenoid # 2 for a reasonable price and maybe tell me the steps involved in swapping it out with defective one? My friend does not like working on transmissions nor has the time so i am kind of in limbo. I would like to know the procedure. I do have another friend who can help me. I am guessing this is a messy job, i will need some sort of lift... I wish Pat was my next door neighbor but he sounds busy as well...any info will be appreciated...Thanks!

This should help you identify #2 solenoid.
