Someone help me identify problem.
I have a 94 4runner v6. 2x4 automatic Just replaced speed sensor on top of trani but did not fix problem like i was told it would.
My 4runner's engine is strong, sounds good but when i take off in drive it lags, i am having to start it in low and then pop it into drive. It is not downshifting. the speedo does not work as well but the tachometer does. do i need a Transmission #1 Shift Solenoid or did i get the wrong speed sensor??... i heard there are two more sensors inside dash.
So basically this is my only vehicle for work... It drives but I do not want to damage it even worse. once it is over 20 mph it drives fine. i am worried if a situation on the road happened where i had to excel my way out of a collision I would get hit. Any answers would be helpful... thanks

transmission fluid has not been changed by me dip stick shows its level is ok, not sure how original owner took care of it so i thought its best to leave it alone. if i change fluid may be too slick and cause more damage. I will tell my friend about torque conveyer though. I am definitely not a mechanic but I am relaying all your answers to my friend who will be coming here this weekend to help me fix 4runner. thanks for more replies and keep em coming...thanks

my 4runner also has different size tires on it, looking for tires now but can that cause anything i described above? A torque converter is costly but i will run that by my friend and see if he can check that. what about seafoam ? truck runs good at high speed ... going up hills, and first giving it gas from park or at a light/ stop sign is when it gives me problems and i have to start it in low til i reach 20/25 mph.

How could changing the ATF make it slick and cause damage?
Sounds like a torque converter.. might be costly but owning a car/truck requires fixing/maintaining it.
You need the tires to be the same size. Mismatched is not azgood thing.

my friend told me that transmissions are unpredictable... he is a pretty dam good mechanic and friend who i trust. he said something about that if fluids were not changed for a long time it would be better just to add fluid ...over the years metal build up etc.. collected so if i were to flush it and add new fluid it may be too slick....im not a mechanic thats why im asking questions on here to get other opinions.
If it were a torque converter does anyone know where i can find the part and does truck need to be on a lift? or is this something we can do at home?

When not to flush:
Before draining or flushing you should pull the dip stick and look at the fluid. If it is dark, burnt smelling, and you see little flakes or speck in it, DO NOT FLUSH IT. The fluid and transmission is TOAST, but the transmission just has not figured out it should die yet. In these cases for reasons no one has figured out yet, if you flush a transmission in this condition it will fail right away. Real strange, but that is what seems to happen. If your trans is in this condition just drive it while you save for a replacement transmission. There is no way of telling when it will fail. It might be today, next week, or next year, but it is doomed.
The goal here is to flush the trans BEFORE the fluid gets rancid. What you are taking out should look like what you are putting in. Do not wait for a color or smell change. My 4Runner Owner's Manual calls for transmission fluid change at 30,000 mile intervals. The industry standard it two years OR 24,000 miles which ever comes first. It is your truck, you decide what is best for you.

it might be the torque converter, but if i was you i would check the throttle position sensor(TPS) on the side of the throttle body. sometimes when they fail it causes the tranny ti shift wierd.

I brought to mr transmission for free diagnostic ...maybe some codes will show up to tell me the problem... i will check throttle position sensor this week before I decide what to do. fluid smelled okay but looked a little dark. One other question I haven't had answered yet is the speedo. are any of the fixes recommended here linked to a bad speedo ? all gauges do work but the speedo. If I were to replace speed sensor inside dash would that fix it. one goes to motor and the other to speedo i think.

stuck key
can not turn key to the last click and remove without removing a terminal from the battery. igition? could it be not going into park all the way. will spending the money on a diginastocs even tell me the problem...im the first owner and have 300,000+ miles without one problem besides rotors...whats up with those too. short on cash and need good advice!

Okay...so here is latest news on my 94 4runner 2x4
took it to mr transmission just to get code , the code is 63. They said my truck is starting in 3rd. they wanted to charge me 2500 to rebuild the whole transmission and do it right. I do not have that kind of cash on hand right now so i will try some smaller things first like the throttle position sensor. if the throttle position sensor is the problem and i correct that will the speedo work again too ? if that doesn't work then my next step is to have my friend try to install a torque converter without contaminating. Does this sound like the right plan?
