OK, my truck failed inspection. I need brakes, rotars, bearings and a stabilizer bushing. It's an 88' 4runner. The work isnt hard to do, but i do have a question. When replacing the bearings, do i really need to replace the race?

 

Generally yes, the bearings will come w/ new races so may as well. And if the old bearings are gone, they have likely damaged the races any way. And it is a good idea to keep the bearing and it's respective race together as a matched set:

I am not replaceing with oem parts, and all major parts dealers do NOT sell as a set. well, i cant say all, but pep boys,auto zone and advanced all sell them seperatly.

 

I re-used the races years ago when I replaced my bearings and haven't had any trouble. If I was to do it over again I would replace them since I'm now older and wiser then I was back then.

And remind me never to move to MD, they really check all that crap?

Well in that case, clean and carefully inspect each race looking for pitting or discoloration (from excessive heat) and replace any that look bad.

 

Safety, it's to make sure the vehicle is legally "fit for the road." Pretty sure everywhere requires at least a safety inspection even if emissions testing isn't.

 

In WI we have neither.

 

Come to Tennessee, I'll show you a safety inspection......... there is none here I can do whatever the hell I want to my truck, and the only way I would get in trouble is if a cop was somehow smart enough to figure out what I did and pull me over......

A lot of cops will straight up compliment you on a truck here

 

It takes longer to get to the bearings than it does to pound out the races and pound new ones back in so why not change them?

 

I'd fail if CO had one. That's one more hasle I'm happy to avoid.

 

Only emissions here. My truck could be a pile of rust held together by bailing wire but as long as it passed emissions I could get new tags.
