questions about gearing

looking at running 35 inch tires on a 87 4runner with a upgraded 22re. but dont have enought power with the 33 coopers i have on it now.

what do i need to do to run 35s?

im lifted 7 inches already so have plenty of room along with marlin crawler bumpers and cut out flares.

do i need different gearing? if so which ones?

or do i step up to a dual transfercase?

i run mostly highway so i need the ability to climb up highway hills. but want the abilty to crawl off road

let me know what you think

You deffenitly need to regear your 4Runner. You need at least 4.88 gears, most here will say go with 5.29`s, but thats up to you. Im running 37'' tires with 4.88 gears on my 86 4Runner.

yea. well i dont have time to sit and search thru millions of posts with everyones thoughts.

so i decided not to go with a strait axle. im still running ifs.
i have 4 inch suspension lift. 3 inch body. with 33 inch coopers

marlin crawler bumpers front and rear. which i plated solid with some diamond plate and will be adding those sometime this week along with 4 hella 500 lights mounted to it.

i dont want to switch to strait axle due to the fact i run a 96 red ford 250 with a custom strait axle and 8 inches of lift. so i want this to be a just for fun rig.

so i wanna run 35s.

will someone explain the difference between the 4.88 gears and 5.29 gears?

mpg wise?
speed wise?
explain the differences please
as is my 5th gear wont climb a hill. it will only cruise. so im down shifting.

I've run both 5.29s and 4.88s w/ 33s on my '85/22RE. Better MPG w/ 5.29s, the 22RE likes to rev higher. But long highway drives were tiring withe engine wound up in the 3300-3500 range all the time. Did climb hills nice. W/ 4.88s, highway revs are in the 2800-3000 range, much more comfortable, quieter and less vibrations. More downshifting, though. And I have run 35s w/ the 4.88s and don't really notice a lot of difference. Don't have a lot of miles on those tires. Other difference is w/ 4.88s, speedo will be dead on w/ 35s, reads about 6% fast w/ 33s. W/ 5.29s and 33s, you be like 13% fast (I ran a speedo calibration box when I had that tire/gear combo).

what do you mean by you ran 35s and didnt notice a difference?

that you didnt notice a power loss between 33 and 35s?

or that the gears didnt make a difference?

also, i need to build a extension for my front bumper before it goes on. but i dont wanna use the cheap ones that came with the body lift.

any ideas for that? there marlin cralwer
i want something strong that can take a hit.
how much does a speedo calibraton box run?

well in all reality..most 35" tires are only about 1" bigger in circumference than a 33" tire..lol

atleast i think?? lmao

i mean..i myself will probably not run 5.29's..i might..but i doubt it..i will find a set of junkyard 4.88's and run em with 35's to see if i like it or not..

i just want the best MPG's possible..with as much power as possible lol

I meant that when I drove with 33s and when I drove w/ 35s, I did not notice a very significant difference in driving. I did not do any big hills or a lot of driving, but it was not anything like when I ran 33x15.50 bias ply Swampers, with those I essentially had to run one gear lower than I did with the 33" BFGs.

also, i need to build a extension for my front bumper before it goes on. but i dont wanna use the cheap ones that came with the body lift.

I think it was in the range of $100, that was back in '97. Check with a local speedometer shop and see what they have.

35s have a 1" bigger radius and will sit 1" higher than 33s, but the circumference is the distance all the way around the tire and that would differ by a few inches (maybe 4 or so).

I run a 34.9 x 12.4 Baja Claw w/4.88's and 4Crawler is right, the speedo will be right on and the rpms are around what he says. I get about 16 mpgs after intersate driving between 65-75 mph and a days worth of wheelin with family(wife and two kids) and gear inside. The cheapest way(maybe) might be to score a junkyard set instead of buying new gears and master install kits.
