Cool Need suggestions for chain replacement????

Alright guys, I bought an 89' 22re a few months ago and theres a few things that need to be inspected. The engine runs strong, but has some definate start-up ( 4 seconds) vlave noise, and alittle chain slap. (I think) The truck has 200k on it, and I don't know its complete service history. I plan to first pull the VC, adjust the valves and inspect the guides and such..... I recently noticed some (clean) anitfreeze leaking from the water pump area, so I plan to do that also. In addition, the truck has a hot start shake, which clears out after 30 seconds of driving, and id like to figure that out too... My main question is, do you guys think I should pull the head and do all the pumps and chain in one shot, or fix what needs fixing and nothing more??? I have no real signs of HG failure and I plan on doing a compression test. I know the head can be a pain, but I don't wanna be back in the engine next year with a blown HG or bad oil pump. I want to do things right, without going totally nuts. I'm ready to order my stuff from engbuild and get started, but I really need opinions and advice. Im not a novice by any means, but I don't have much experience with this truck. This site is GREAT and I figure this is the place to turn to for input.... Thanks guys....

If the compression is good you don`t really need to do the head gasket unless you really want to. If you do replace the timing chain, also replace the water pump and the oil pump and all you should need to do.

Cool Timing chain...

The compression was 155-165 all around, and the oil and antifreeze are all clean, so I think I'll leave the head alone... Any suggestions or advice in regards to doin the chain? Id like to take the oil pan off, but I know the diffs gotta drop...Any tips to doing that well??? Im pretty sure the driver guide is broken, so I wanna try to fish out the pieces? Thanks for your help.

NOT pulling the oil pan is STUPID. The timing chain guide remains will clog your oil pump pickup and you'll be doing the chain again in no time.
