lockers maybe?

im starting to think..rather that put $150 into each 33x13.50 LTB...instead just doing lockrights or a similar lunchbox locker...my question is...is it really worth it...i mean..alllll i do is go muddin...no rocks or anything....are those 2 extra tires spinning going to help my that much when (more like if) i get stuck...and also...my truck is STOCK...NOTHING new about it..alll original...so would it be a bad idea to put lockers front and rear on my '80....i dont go through the mud redlining the 20R...and i hardly ever really get on it...but..im afraid if i go this route then i might break something....(i have 31x10.50's right now...TSL's)fairly lightweight tire...would it put more wear and tear on my truck to run the 33x13.50's or the 31's with lockers f/r...

lockers will make ur 4x4 feel like it used to be 2 wheel drive and with the little tires u wont have any breaking problems.it really is a night and day difference.specially in the mud and sand.u will probably do almost as good or just as good in 2 wheel drive as u did in 4x4.

With lockers, it not so much that 4 tires are spining instead of 2, but more about that the tire with traction ALWAYS has power.

Lockers are FAR AND AWAY the best thing you can do to increase the off road capability of the truck.

As you save up for bigger tires, add $665 to it and upgrade to 30 spline longfields in the front and a lot of the breakage concerns will be eliminated.

Start with a rear lockright. You will love it! I drive mine everyday on the road and its perfectly fine, off road its a whole new animal. Old 4x4 = new 2wd. You will encounter a little extra wear, but you will probibly upgrade your tire size before that even becomes a factor.

Good tires will get you a Loooong way as you surely already know but a locked four wheel drive is a night & day difference from an open diff one. You'll love being locked but if you need tires....you'll still need them AFTER putting in lockers. But the good thing is there are tires that are plenty capable of clearing in the mud & getting good traction for less that the LTB's

I don't have a locked Toyota by the way but I have had trucks in the past that were. (detroit lockers iirc)

Just get one for the rear for now. Run it for a while and I think you'll be convinced how much of a difference it will make.

A rear lockright was my first mod 14 years ago to my old truck, which I still have. I added a front the following year. Even with 31's BFG MT's I ran circles around most people. Absolutely incredible where traction will get you.

While your considering lunchbox lockers take a look at Aussie Lockers, those are really popular right now and people think they may be stronger or more reliable than Lockrights. Price is about the same.

I fitted lockrights front and rear. Best modification by far. Go almost any place now.

I don't rock climb either, I generally like to play in mud in fields and powerlines.

I can tell you that lockers will give alot of confidence and often peace of mind when four-wheeling that your chances of getting stuck are less likely. They will definatley take you further than you would have ever imagined. Good tires are also key.

The flip side to this is when you do get stuck it is usually pretty bad and in a place where most people won't be able extract your vehicle... Unless you have another friend with lockers, winch or a tractor.

Can make or break your day.

i agree i would just get a locker for the rear for now and wait to get a front locker until you get longfields. and ive seen you say on here that you dont drive that much, so why not just weld the rear?

unless your tires are in dire need of replacing i would go for the lockers, but mr_schuster does have a good point, none of my friends have locked trucks so i can go much further than they can, so i have to be carful not to get stuck off where nobody can get to me.

I went with the clutch type posi (power brute) front and rear hoping to provide optimum traction without breaking anything. My first test run was last weekend on some mixed mud and rock trails, so far it seems tighter than I expected. Traction was good but it needs more testing or at least that's what I tell my wife.

Rear locker is the best thing i have done so far to my rig, next would be sliders.

But that extra grip of having both tires turning helps out alot.

OH and i am just running a rear locker right now, waiting to find a used front arb to run that.
