Got any tips for organization?

Hello there thanks for checking out this Thread.

I have a 22re in a 1992 PU. Unfortunately the head gasket has an internal leak that is boiling my coolant causing overheating and VERY poor running. I have a decent background with rebuilding Chevy small blocks but never have I worked on any 4-bang'r before now.

With my small block rebuilds my issue was always keeping organized from tear down to reinstall. Not so much with parts like bearings, gears, and valves but with vacuum hoses and electrical wires. Like is said I will be tearing into my first 4 cylinder and I would like to have a good start cause for most of you know that makes for a much easier rebuild.

So please, if you guys or girls have any memories of hardtimes you had with your rebuilds regarding staying organized the entire way through please post back. And if you have and advice for a first time 22re rebuild feel free to post however small the issue was.

Thank you again for your time.

A few organization methods I use:
1) Take photos of the engine and hoses from various angles.
2) Use painters tape on both ends of hoses/electrical connections, etc. Label what it is with a marking pen, put an 'A' on both ends, and the next connection label with a 'B' on both ends, next 'C', etc.
3) Put nuts and bolts for each step in zip lock bags, label the location, and number the bags sequentially. On reassembly, start with the highest numbered bag and work backwards.
4) If bolts are of different lengths, draw a quick sketch and drop it in the zip lock bag with the rest of the hardware.

I don't know why I haven't thought of your third method yet but it's a great idea. I mostly want to try the labeling in sequential order during tear down.

Thank you I can't wait to try these and brag about to my friends how fast I got the gasket replaced.

Welcome! If you get quart size zip locks, you can put mounting brackets right in there with the hardware.

It seems like common sense now that I have read your ideas but I guess every time I tore my engines apart I was thinking "as long as I got pictures everything will be fine" lol but pictures aren't always enough.
