Ebrake light acting weird

Tonight I was driving home, and had almost no gas left (it was below the E). And since it's late out all the gas stations were closed, but i figured i could make it home anyway. I started the truck (86' 4Runner) and took off the e-brake but the brake light still stayed on. And on the whole trip home, the "low fuel" light never came on. When i would pull the e-brake out the light would get brighter, and when i pushed it in, it would get dimmer (but still bright). I've been low on gas with the truck before and the "low fuel" light did come on. What do you guys think this is, just the e-brake light acting as the "low fuel" light? I thought this was strange, i guess i'll see if it goes away when i get gas tomorrow. If it doesn't, does anyone have any ideas why it's doing this?

I did a little searching and i guess ill check my brake fluid tomorrow, as that is a likely culprit.

I definitely don't think that it is connected to the fuel level

Sounds like the e-brake sensor is faulty, thats usually what happens, dimmer when the e-brake is off and brighter when the e-brake is on. But like you said it can act as a warning light for low brake fluid level.

Its on the shaft of the e-brake lever, under the dash. It's just a little button that breaks the connection to the warning light when its pushed in.
