hard to keep idling every start up
can someone please help i got a 88 with 22re i recently bought and it has new plugs and wires also new chain also new gas tank fuel pump and filter. when trying to crank its real hard to but when it finaly does it tries cutting out and i have to give it gas to keep it running but once i get going i can go mile down road and its fine just a small bit of sputter to it but will stay idling pretty good. someone told me i need to turn the distributor cap a little any help is appreciated

Its hard to crank, or just to start? Does it crank fine is my question I guess
You say it could be timing, have you checked it with a timing light? That would be a good starting point to eliminate that as an issue.
Otherwise,
Cold start sensor could be clogged with grime or faulty
Cold start timer switch could be faulty (tells the cold start sensor to turn on)
Temp Switch No. 2 could be faulty also, contributing to this issue
Fuel injectors could be leaking, possibly check fuel pressure to fuel rail
There are many threads on here regarding cold start issues, so if its not your timing, I would look into those possibilities.

update we turned the distributor a lil bit then it atleast cranked and idled without giving it gas but a lil low and still rough so i put new plugs distributor cap and button and plug wires on there it ran like new truck and idle alot better but when left cuz house to come home i pulled in yard cut it off and tried cranking again well i got the same thing hard to start and had to use the pedal it idled like crap

sorry it turns over fine just while turning key i have to hit the gas and keep hitting the gas to keep it running but drives fine. what gets me after i put the new plugs,wires,dist cap,and rotor button in it ran like new i kept cutting off and cranking and no probs but the time i got home well same ol crap

The timing on these engines is very important to their performance. Do you have a timing light? If not get one somewhere? You can't just keep playing with the distributor and set it. You have to jump 2 terminals in the Diagnostic plug to get "base timing" in order to set it correctly... Get a Service manual... like... a haynes or clitons or something. IT will show you step by step.

sorry teuf what im saying is we set twisted the cap by hand when we had the old plug wires and cap and button on there and it cranked better. then we put new wires,cap,and button on after that and then it ran excellent so we kept cranking and cutting it off and restarting and still did great then when i got home i had same problem again
