Crankshaft pulley installation

Hey, I pulled my front cover and did a timing replacement although while re-installing the crank pulley I ran into some trouble. The pulley will only slide on 80% of the way even when I hit it with a 1/2 air gun. I need another 1/4 or so untill the pulley will align with the water pump pulley.
What have I messed up here?
Any ideas guys?

I'll ask the obvious
any chance you are not ligning up the keyway of the HB with the key on the crankshaft?

...and for the record...when it comes to reinstalling the Harmonc balancer bolt, using the impact gun without a hold-down tool is asking for trouble.

I used a new shiny bolt on mine. For the $8 from the dealer it's cheap insurance against a runaway harmonic balancer.

Yeah, its aligned with the key. Whats the harmonic balancer? never heard of such a part, could this in someway limit how far the pulley can be sinched on if its messed up? I just bought the truck for 2k so its undoubtedly got alot of ed parts within it.

Other than dirt/grime on the crankshaft surface and /or the inside of the harmonic balancer (the part the big bolt holds on the crankshaft ) there isn't really anything that can get in the way other than a broken/damaged key.
You should be able to see the condition of the key with the covers in place.
You did install the timing belt guide with the cupped side outwards right?
Can you do a "test fit with the bottom timing cover removed to see where it gets stuck?

Sounds like you got some dirt or scrapped up some metal on the crank shaft while air wrenching the pulley on.... #1 run never use an air gun to put a pulley on... only taking off.... they have a touque spec.... but its not serious just good and tight.... sure theres not somethin wrong with the water pump pulley? not upside down is it?

Oh and a harmonic balancer is on the back or the crank pulley it helps eliminate engine vibration.... hope you didn't beat on it too much....not good for it...

Yeah, I know I screwed the pooch on the harmonic balancer. The Crank Pulley should slide on far enough so the TDC markings are fairly inline, not the case now.
