Bumper Coating

I recently finished welding up a new rear bumper for my '91 pickup and i'm thinking about coating it with Herculiner or a similar rubberized coating. Has anyone had any experience with coating a bumper with this material? I'm wondering how well it holds up to gravel or mud from the tires or other normal wear and tear. Thanks.Justin

Ive heard good things about using herculiner on bumpers. From what you said about just gravel and mud im sure that will be a good route for you. I have however heard that it fades really fast.

Now if this was a trail rig I would just say use flat black paint. No coating will stand up to a bumper getting bashed and dragged across jagged rocks. Flat black paint is also good because it is cheaper and alot easier to touch up.

Plan on abusing the bumper? I agree on flat black it, that way when you scrape it up, touch ups are easy.

Lets see the bumper!

I don't plan on abusing the bumper to much. I use it for hauling firewood, hunting, some off roading but also daily driver. I live an hour out in the country and travel alot of steep snow covered roads in the winter and end up towing other vehicles (the ill-prepared).

I haven't welded the shackle mounts to the bumper yet, my welder isn't big enough to burn them on properly. Heading out to a friends shop in a few mintues to get it mounted to the truck and weld the shackle mounts on.

Thanks everyone for the input will post pics when it's mounted up and coated.

X2 on the Line-X. I have both my bumpers done that way. I'm having a few front bumper being made but this time I'm getting it Powder Coated.

Finished up my bumper and then got it mounted on the truck. I ended up not using the Herculiner. I found a Rustoleam rubberized coating. It's probably not as durable as the herculiner but it will be easier to fix when it gets scrapes and dings in it. Here is a pic of the final product. Thanks for everyones help.
