long story short. i bought a set of toyota axles with the intention of doing an SAS swap. well what i didnt notice for some reason was that the front axle had a auto-hub either conversion or came stock with it. my question is what exactly do i have to do in order to convert to or back to manual locking hubs? Can i get away with just buying some 30 spline hubs and be good or what? getting close to buying my kit so an help from the yota tech community would be great!!

They should come off like regular hubs, then install locking hubs on it

This wasn't a conversion, some SA Toyotas came with Auto hubs (mine did)

This^ except for you will have to remove the face plate and take out a 54mm nut that holds the auto hub on.

Also, make sure you get all the clutches out or the manual hub won't fit. There are plenty of resources online to tell you the exact process of this swap.

Should be just a simple remove-replace:

Note that Warn hubs were used in the above article, but a set of solid axle Aisin hubs are a better option.

When to rebuild/regrease?

I'm doing the v6 brake upgrade and need to take the rotors off to get turned and so I need to get the manual hubs off. Might as well clean them up and get new gaskets right? I'm debating whether or not to do it.

How crucial is it to grease the hubs? Can't find anything about how often to regrease. Seems like a PITA to get the little seals and gaskets, and I don't have a torque wrench...

Think I can get away with not touching the hubs and leaving the rotors a little gouged for my brake swap?

Do it once and be done with it. No sense in doing an upgrade half way.

Yeah I know youre right. I'll do it the right way and just never have to think about it again. Anyone know part numbers for the gaskets/seals so I can get them on Rockauto? My FSM doesnt show the part number.

Drive without locking hubs on?

I just finished cleaning and painting my aisin locking hubs:

I got brand new gaskets but need to take it to the shop to change out the rotors (I don't have the 54mm socket to do the job and my mechanic is going to swap them for me cheap). Can I leave the hub off while I go down the road? I just don't want to put on the new gaskets and then take them off at the shop again.

Can I drive like this?

Just put them on w/o the gasket or maybe a thin film of RTV or take one of the gaskets and trace it on paper and cut out a temporary one to use. Hub will keep dirt out of the bearings and keep the grease from getting flung out.

Thanks 4crawler will do.

About the bearings, I bought new ones to put in and I'm a little confused- does one set go into the hub and the other on the hub assembly? I wanted to replace them and already bought some but are bearings the type of thing where if it ain't broke don't fix it?

Both go inside the wheel hub, one inside and one outside:

Quick question/ confirmation.

I just picked up a new too me 87 4runner... It appears from what I have read that I have auto hubs and no add? I believe its an sr5... body work so no badges but its got the tach and that hande device on middle of of my dash to tell me the degrees of tilt..

The guy said to just drive the truck in 4 wheel drive?

As far as I can tell if I pop it in 2h and back up a little bit then pull forward I should be good?

I locking washer and nut needed?

I recently did a 2 inch lift on my 95 4Runner. For all the reasons I have read I am going to switch to manual Aisin locking hubs. Imhave been reading through these posts and the how toos. But I can not find a definite answer. The question. When switching to manual lockers on my 95 with ifs, will I only need to slap on the Aisin hubs. Or will I need the flat washer, 50 mm nut and lock washer set as described in the how to on 4x4 wire? That set is an extra 100 bucks so I am hoping the answer is no. But I want to do the damn thing right the first time.

I have a 90 Toyota truck with the v6 a340h tranny....would some kind of malfunction in the add system keep the tranny in what seems like 4lo? Truck is real slow off the lines then it kinda surges as it shifts and begins to slowly pickup speed. Never seems to shift out of 2nd and rpms are 4000 plus at 25 mph and only get higher from there as I accelerate. Around 40 mph the rpms are around 5500-6000 and the tricks cuts out if I get over 40

Between these two vids and all the other info from the forum trouble shooting or swap should be pretty easy.
