Swapped Relay

Before I messed with the back wiper I did swap another relay in a repeated all the tests. Same results.

Haven't swapped it back in yet to see what would happen.

Some Progress!!!

I stopped working on this for a day to do some cleaning and body work on the 4runner.

This morning I unplugged the rear wiper motor located driver side back. Now the relay clicks when I push on the button from the console. But the window doesn't drop. I suspect the window lock detection since this was hacked to pieces when I found it.

Window up/down button - Relay clicks with Ig on, no window movement
Pin 5 to ground - Relay clicks with Ig on, no window movement
Pin 6 to ground - Relay clicks with Ig on, no window movement

Pin 11 to ground - no click with Ig off, no window movement
Pin 12 to ground - no click with Ig off, no window movement

Key in tailgate - relay clicks, no window movement

Rear Window motor - still works, window will move nicely when connected to battery.

Isolated one problem area and now need to find the other trouble area.

More Progress

I end arounded the cover latch and lock switch by plugging into Pin 2 (female) and going to ground.

I unplugged the motor and plugged in a voltmeter to the following:
Blue-Black - Window up pushed, get the full 12V, yeah!
Blue Yellow - Window down pushed, 0 volts!

So I can roll the window up but not down.

There must still be a safety in place that isn't working?

Going to recheck my Pin 2 to ground connection.

Here is where I am at

Removed the rear wiper from the equation so that gets rid of the right hand side of circuit diagram.

I am not interested in the using key just yet so that leaves me with 6 things in the loop.

Back Door Unlock Warning Switch
Door Lock Detection Switch
Cover Top Switch
Rear Power Window Lock Switch
Rear Power Window Switch
Relay

What's passed the resistance tests
Back Door Unlock Warning Switch
Door Lock Detection Switch
Rear Power Window Lock Switch
Rear Power Window Switch

Relay Tests

Using the FSM BE-49 I went through all the tests I could. Everything passed except for the Window limit switch ON (Pin 2 to ground) with window closed. Failed that one. It's basically open.

Cover Top Switch was bad! One more thing down.

What's Jumped

Currently I have jumpers in at the Door Lock Detection Switch (1-3) and the Cover Top Switch (2-3).

Update

Well the window motor doesn't go up but there is power going to it in the up position. If I hook it up directly to the battery then no problem.

Even with the battery the window will go up and then stop. I have to back it up a little and then repeat. Sometimes it rolls up just fine with the battery. Not sure what's going in here.

Taking a break from the window for awhile. Worst case I throw it at the mechanic since I've spent a number of days on this with minimal progress.

UPDATES

It's somewhat working.

Top detection switch and rear wiper position sensor were both shot. So I jumpered around that whole mess.

Still nothing going on but the relay clicking. So I cut open the relays and plug it back in with it just hanging there.

It all works. I put it back on the plastic housing and it stops working. I remove the housing and let it hand, all working again.

Basically I think the relay is shot but works when it's in a weird position. I double checked all the wiring (and there was a lot of it) for an bare wire that might be grounding.

Crude Diagram

CONNECTOR

1 2 3

4

With Ig on when I move the relay from just hanging down to about level, relay 3 goes nuts. It fires randomly. This also happens if I just touch the circuit board on the edges and flex it a little.

I did go through all the wires on the connector to make sure nothing was shorting out.

I am pretty sure it's all about those 4 relays.

Super weird behavior but I figured out what I need to fix.

To do list:
Rear Wiper Position Sensor
Lock Detection Sensor
Top Detection Switch
Replace all four switchy things in the relay.

Need others with first-hand experience to chime in on actual location of limit switches, and whether they should be open/close when window /door is u/down open/close.
'cause as I mentioned I haven' verified this before. No time to do it this week.

@RAD4Runner

Thanks again for all the help. I tried my best to channel your thought process! It all went pretty well. I am going to make a parts yard run to find some replacements to play with.

In case you are wondering.

If you suspect the rear wiper is causing a problem with the tailgate window you can do this

Which removes it from the relay without screwing anything up.

I also jumped the door lock switch

And the top detection switch, Driver side rear, 2nd bolt forward?

This allowed me to work the rear window ONLY if my relay was hanging loose.

Three Relays

Currently the rear window doesn't work at all again. I figured out that one relay was bad. I picked up to others out at the parts yard that worked in their respective 4runners.

So with key in, IG on the only way to make the relay click is to this

And press the up/down button on the console.

When I press on the right hand side with my finger the #3 relay fires like crazy. I can also get it to this by flexing the cable.

I put in the other relay just for fun and saw the same behavior. I am being to think something is wacky with the wiring harness.

I took the wiring apart from front to back looking for a bad wire but found nothing.

Rear wiper

Make sure the rear wiper is in the up position all the way. And that the connection to the wiper motor is in tact as this was why i spent too much money and way too much time trying to fix mine

Turns out is was the plastic connector. The thingy that plugs into the relay. The metal strips in there are all loose.

So I flipped the relay upside down and now it works. Weird but the window goes up and down.

I went out to the yard and got a new connector. Someday I'll wire it in.
