87 4runner needs new engine any recommendations

I recently purchased an 87 4runner. i bought it with 132k miles on it and on day of purchase changed the oil and topped off all the fluids. within 30 days of buying it and roughly 400 highway miles the bottom end blew. i found this a little wierd considering how resilient these r22s are. i am looking to put another motor in but am not sure what the best choice is i dont have very much money and have discovered a few options on my own. i found a used motor on this site for 900 http://searchpartsengines.com/?gclid...FQPsKgodJTA5nA
i have also found a brand new motor on japanmotors for 1557.00 i believe. what would be the best option in this case. i am new to toyota minus a few old cars i have had in the past. if there are any other options or if these previously stated motors are know to be garbage please let me know any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated. thanks

will you be doing the install yourself or having a garage do it?

I cannot speak of the quality of the motor's but see if any shops in your area are a Jasper Motor installer. They would have been one of my options on my truck when I did the rebuild on it. But since I felt comfortable rebuilding the motor myself and was able to have the down time on it, for what it would have cost me to put one of those in at an installer, I got a slightly better motor IMO. Cam, brand new head, 30 over, Weber etc etc etc.

One of the problems with buying a motor and having someone different install it is warrenty issues if something comes up, one guy almost always blames another. And if they do cover the motor they usually will not cover the labor. With a Jasper motor the warranties are good and the labor is covered, which is really important if your not a mechanic.

Red face

There are a bunch of States with a Columbus in them.

What else needs attention if this vehicle was neglected no telling how much more will need R&R till it is up to speed

Don`t take this the wrong way but since you can`t work on your own vehicle till you get done paying to replace an engine with labor and the engine.

You will have spent money enough to go out and buy another used Toyota 4X4 Of this vintage.

You don`t say if this is a manual or automatic If manual it is foolish in my book not to replace the clutch while the engine is out.

I had also looked at Jasper Engines but without looking again I had thought with the labor it came close to $3000.00 but the warranty is nice. Looking now the price for the engine was $2384.00.

Then again a installer will not replace unless contracted all the things that may need done like vacuum hoses coolant hoses etc

I will also admit to spending way more money on my Toyotas then is logical

In the end it all comes down to what you want or can do.
