Ditto, cut the cat out, lay a temp pipe in place and see what happens.

Is the Cat a common problem? I wonder if I should just remove mine for good measure in my 88 22RE?

1. No it's not a common problem.

2. It's a Federal offense to remove emissions equipment. If you have to get smog tested, it will fail for sure without it.

The test pipe is just to make sure if it is or isn't the cat!

Imo, that might be the best bet before throwing a bunch more money to find out the problem!

(Btw hows the timing? when we first got my v6 running, it was running out of wack and made the exhaust manifold glow red! Corrected the timing and problem solved!)

Good luck

You said it was a 22r meaning that you also have a carb your mixture might be way leaned out causing the red hot pipes.

I agree.. Air/ Fuel mixture is way off... I had that happen to mine... Wrong computer caused it to run way to rich and the manifold to get cherry red...

Check for a crack in the base of the carb,or base gasket.Somewhere in the intake area its gettin extra air.Improper fuel mix.
