4runner to Pickup starter Compatibility

Hello,

I have a 1990 Toyota pickup (3.0 liter manual transmission 4x4) and I need to replace the starter. I have found one off a 1987 4runner (manual). I'm not sure if this will be interchangeable with my truck? I figure worse case scenario I could possibly use the contacts if the $20 starter doesn't work. Any ideas? Thank you for the help.

Pickup to 4runner doesnt matter, but the one for the 4runner is for a 22re, im guessing that it wont work on the 3.0.

Now there's a 1988 4runner 3.0 V6 or a T100 starter that's available as well. Shouldn't this work since they're the same engine size?

If both engines are 3vze the starter will bolt up. However, the electrical connections (pigtails) may be different. The electroincs on an 88 3vze did not mate to my 94 wiring harness (3vze). I am not sure which year they changed the connections.

When you mated the starter to your wiring harness, what modification did you do to make it work?

go to oreilly's or autozone's website and lookup a starter for the different vehicles in question and if the part numbers are the same then you got a match.

RE.: Part numbers at Autozone: Is it possible that there would be a starter motor with a different part # that bolts up but is more powerful?
I have a 94 Pickup originally v6 5sp but someone put a Mercedes diesel in it and I need a stronger starter in cold weather. Any Ideas?

Starter needs to work with the engine so best bet would be to use the same starter that matches your Mercedes engine, or ask members of forum for your Mercedes engine if they know an upgrade starter.

The kit that was used uses the Toyota transmission so the Merc starter won't work

I do not think the starter cares what transmission is used because the starter mounts to the engine.
The Merc starter will not work mechanically with the Mercedes engine that it mounts and bolts on to, OR
The merc started will not work electrically with the wiring?
A problem well-stated is almost solved.

You're right. Silly me had a picture in my mind of the starter mounted on the bellhousing and I was unable to look at it the last few days. Thank you!
