I recently had a crank, no spark condition on my 88 pickup 22re after following the FSM troubleshooting procedures I noticed the primary resistance on my coil is out of spec not by a lot but out of spec nonetheless - FSM states should be within 0.5-0.7ohms and I measured it at 1.1ohms (yes, cold) FSM says to replace the coil if out of spec - I didn't. I found out the 40amp fusible link fuse closer to the firewall on the engine compartment fusebox was blown (I've yet to figure out why) I replaced it and the truck fired right up like a champ.

Anyway, I figure I should get a coil in case it fails soon in the future, I was looking at the usual scumbags, autozone, orielly, napa and pep boys they all had this Accel 8140 coil they stated fits my truck BUT the resistances they list are not within what the FSM list. The Accel apparently is 1.4ohm primary and the secondary is 9.4kohm (FSM is 11.4kohm-15.6kohm) -- Is it okay to use? They've got me hooked with a better spark, better throttle response and quicker startups but would rather not use it if it'll damage something. Also read the ignitor usually gets damaged due to low primary coil resistance - that true?

OEM one is a bit more than twice as much than the Accel but it's been 30 years (assuming it is in fact the original one) and it's still going so might be better off just getting another factory one.

 

Some of these factory coils have over a 1/4 million miles and are 30 years old .

Then we are talking a engine with just a little over 100 horse power when fresh
