Rattling sound

Rattling sound
I'm new to the forum . I own a used 2004 Toyota 4 runner V6 and it has a dull rattling sound when letting off the gas at 40 to 60 MPH . Lower or highway speeds there is no sound . It sounds like a cable or similar sound coming from somewhere under the vehicle . Another way of describing the dull sound is marbles rolling around inside of a plastic jar . I looked everything over underweight and secured everything that could possibly rattle and the sound is still there . Universals seem good , I just can't figure out where this sound is coming from . Any ideas

The original section you posted this in was a staging area for Tech Write-Ups - doubt many people noticed it. It has been moved to the 03+ 4Runner/GX470, & 05+ Tacomas section.
As for your rattling sound, did you check to see if there are rocks or debris in the cat converter heat shield?
Had that happen to me on every rig I've owned.

I've already done most of that and fixed a few things that potently could cause a rattle but the noise is still there . Even thought there are no indications I wonder if it could be drive train related . If there is something causing this rattle I sure can't figure out what it is .

I read a lot of posts on mysterious rattling coming from under carriage on a 2004 Toyota 4 runner and I'm starting to believe my rattle is coming from my exhaust . I can see a definite hole in the resonator near the rear of the exhaust and possibly a small hole in my muffler .
Some guys mentioned possibly the noise is coming from inside of the cat converter also ???
Thanks , Jack

Well , after eliminating everything else I could find that could be causing my rattle I decided to remove the spare tire from underneath the rear of the 4 Runner . Of course it was rusted and I had to cut the cable to get it down . No good underneath anyway in my neck of the woods . Anyway after I got the spare down and removed I took the 4 Runner out for a test drive . Wallaa , no more rattle .
Thanks for your help , Jack HOGV8
