I can't see why it wouldn't fit. It might just take some work to get it in there.

Oil pans are different
Fuel injection is different
Intake is different
Exhaust is different

Long and short of it is, no, the 83 celica engine will not work. Sure it will physically fit, but thats about it. You wont be able to use the 83 stuff, and the 91 stuff wont swap to the 83 engine.

I could be wrong. But I thought if you stripped the celica motor down to a long block and used the truck stuff on it then the swap would work. When I was thinking about replacing the engine in mine I found a lot of places that made no distinction between the two. Seems to me that the long blocks were the same, you just had to swap all the other stuff from car to truck. That also explains all the extra holes that dont get used in the block and head. Maybe they do get used on the car install.

83 heads have 9 exhaust studs, 85+ have 10. the exhaust ports are also round on the 83, and pear shaped on the 85+

You can find other 22RE's around if you don't want to go with a new/rebuild. Check craigslist.org. I saw one for $300 on my local site and I didn't think anybody else had them around here!
