Far as I know the frames are the same from 86-95, and the rear part of the frame from 84-95, so a shortbed (not certain about the Xtracab bed - just look underneath at the body mount locations) will bolt right on from any of those years.. But, the body lines obviously won't look quite right...

Ive always wondered if maybe a taco bed would fit on my '94. Mines all dented up and I think the updated look would be cool. Anybody got any input??

Bed sizes are the same (like for canopies.) But you would need to look closely at the mounts to see if they are in the same place. The "updated look" would have body lines that don't line up. How cool is that?

The fuel filler doors are on opposite sides, so that would need to be addressed.

D'oh! Never thought about that.

And the lines? I guess I'd have to see one to get an idea of how good/bad it would look. Anybody good w/photoshop??

The taillight harness plugin won't work with the Tacoma taillights - wire splicing is required. The stock '89 - '94 tails won't fit into the Tacoma bed, either. The earlier truck boxes ('79 - '83) will bolt up with modification to the very front box mounts, gas filler is correct, and the taillights plug in (I think). The round wheel openings will flow well with the look of the truck, and the body lines could be made to work with some creative striping or two-tone paint job.
