what is this orange piece in the hose? my truck is missing this and the hose is just taped togther from the PO

 

it should show up on the vacuum diagram on the hood stickers,
if not you can download the FSM using the link in my signature

 

looks like part #23285A VALVE,CHECK,NO. 1 (see pic below)

I believe it's a $6 part, if I remember reading that right.

Its a one way valve. Air can only travel in one direction with this in place.

 

It's there for a reason. Most likely because it would be bad if air would travel in the wrong direction because it would cause a vacuum leak or something. I am probably wrong with what it does on that motor, but I am not wrong in saying its there for a reason. Please do not remove stuff off your motor without knowing why its there and what it does and what it affects.

And yes it's a one way check valve.

 

i didnt remove it. it was missing when i bought the truck. The picture is of another truck and i was wondering why i didnt have that check valve so i am ordering one to put in the place of the black tape thanks everyone for the help

 

Looks like that check valve sits between the intake and the ADD switching valves. Probably functions similar to the check valve in the brake booster line. That one is there to only allow engine vacuum to pull air out of the device (increasing the internal vacuum) and not allow that vacuum to drop when the engine vacuum drops, like when you mash the throttle down. Without that valve, you might find your front axle disconnecting and dropping you back into 2WD just when you hit the gas to get out of the mud pit.
