Transmission Woes

1994 4Runner 2WD V6(3VZE) Auto. when cold, at 60 MPH, engine speed is just over 3000 RPM. Once it's warmed it is just over 2000 RPM at 60 MPH. Ideas greatly appreciated. Fresh fluid, filter changed a few days ago. Old fluid not dirty or burnt smelling.

You are aware the transmission doesn't shift into overdrive until the system is up to operating temperature?

Sounds like it's working as designed.

I am not touching the overdrive button at all. I have had the car since it was new and I'd guess I have only pressed that O/D button 5 times - The behavior has changed. Are you saying that when cold, that overdrive is off but the dash light doesn't indicate that it is off ? My dash light either says "O/D Off" or nothing.

Correct.

The O/D switch is just to "force" O/D Off. Otherwise, Overdrive is under the command of the computer. Which means: no Overdrive when cold.
