Unhappy transmission woes

G'day, I am new to the site and am very impressed.
My problem is that ive recently bought an '86 4Runner, 4 cyl auto, and may have cooked my tranny last night Doh! :pat:
After a little 4wheelin' a squeeling noise started from under the hood and stopped for a bit when i stopped. I took it out of 4, unlocked the hubs. Im not a mechanic but know it is not a belt.
This morning I started her fine, put it in reverse, and without moving it started screaming again.

Has anyone heard of/experienced this before? What do these transmissions do when they let go? Again, im not a mechanic and any insight would be appreciated before I get reamed at the local transmission shop!

Thanks again!

You said the noise sounded like it was comming from under the hood, right? The first thing that comes to mind in the trans that might make that kind of sound is the front trans pump. If thats what it is, it is usually caused by a clogged filter. The filter is in the pan on the bottom of the trans (sump). You will need to drop the pan, drain the fluid, and clean or change the filter. But , first I would make sure of where the sound is coming from. If it does sound like it's from the front of the trans, then changing the filter is the first place to go. Do a search on transmission filters, and you should come up with several good threads with info on this.
