Auto transmission woes

Hey everyone, I'm kinda new here, but I'm gonna take advantage of the knowledge that's floating around.
I'm having some issues with the automatic transmission on my 88 4runner. Problem is it shifts like a 5 speed (3 speed actually). If I leave it in drive, it will barely move. I have to shift down to first and then manually shift through the gears. Makes no difference if the truck is hot or cold. I don't think I should be worried about major problems, because it still shifts through all the gears, including OD. Any ideas would be appreciated. Glad I found this site, you guys have some great looking trucks.

Check the adjustment on the tranny cable. Another guy recently had a similar problem, search a little and you'll find it. Wecome to YT.

do a search for shift solenoids and you'll find the answer to your problem.

actually, if the shift solenoids werent working, it would slip something aweful in any gear and barely move (ask me how I know) I would think, 1 adjust the cable, 2 make sure the tps is adjusted right, 3 make sure the nuetral safety switch is adjusted and working, 4 make sure the ecm is telling it when to shift. I just fought this battle, and came down to everything on my list, ecm was my last find, then I gave up, gonna dump a 99 4 runner engine and trans in it, and not waste any more money on the old stuff.

Does your "OD off" light work? It will blink if there is a stored DTC for the transmission.
Mine had code 63 I think...1-2 shift solenoid. Truck would shift from 2-3 in auto mode, manually it would go to first but not overdrive. Re-soldered connection on the solenoid and working fine now. (you can test solenoid function with a 12v battery if you remove it from tranny)

My od light is one of several that don't work at all. The truck shifts like it's a manual. If you have it in 2nd from a stop, it's really in 2nd. It will shift from 2nd to od which is weird. If I'm on the highway and turn the od off, it drops down to third, but I don't have to turn the od on at all. On a seperate note, I replaced the drivers window motor and regulator today. It rolled down but now won't go up and i can't get the rear motor to do anything. GREMLINS
