Transmission jumps out of first gear

I asked this once before but forgot where I put the link. I have a 91 4runner and it will jump out of first once in a while. Someone said that it is a bushing that is not to hard to replace. Does anyone know for sure?

Mine did this for 100,000 miles & I ended up having to get first gear replaced. Never did find out what caused it but no problems with first gear now!

The bushing had nothing to do with mine, but it is a common cause of slop in the shifter & is easy to replace.

Someone makes a nylon replacement shifter bushing that is supposed to be nearly indestructable. (Maybe Marlin Crawler ??). I don't own a 5 speed, but I have read about this bushing on a couple different boards.

His, along with many other peoples transmissions slip out of first sometimes. I know mine does it every once in a while. But it's not nearly enough to worry about it.

When you say "it", I assume you are referring to pulling the shifter to access the bushing? Yes. Open 'er up, replace the bushing, then drive around for a bit without putting the interior cosmetic boot back on. This will insure the boot is not applying to much pressure. No more popping out of gear? Great. It was the bushing, install boot. This is most likely your problem. If it starts to pop out of gear again only after you reinstall the boot, the boot is applying to much "south" pressure and may need to be modified. Do you ever have any issues with it popping out of 3rd?

Nothing is happening in 3rd. I have the engine out but I do not know what is involved with putting in a 1st gear. I am not sure what it would cost of if I could do it myself.

Thanks for the info. I will proably try and do the bushing. It does not jump out that much.

My 1991 truck with 168,000 miles was jumping out of first and third gears. I replaced the bushing beneath my shift lever (which had broken into several pieces) and now it shifts better than new!

Bobakazi's link is not valid anymore. Does anyone have a part # for this bushing?

My 88 pops out of first, replaced the bushing and seat, but continues to pop out of first. There is no grinding or noises, just have to put my hand on the shifter at low speeds and torqueing down......drives great, but is annoying sometimes

If you have replaced the bushings and it still pops out your synchronizers are bad. To fix this you need your tranny rebuilt

Not to thread jack, but I rarely pop out if first, I pop out of 3rd way more often, is this the same problem?? It also grinds going into reverse but only after its been driven.. same thing? I thought it was due to the body lift the p.o. put on
