tranny noises ?

I have an 88 model truck with a 5 speed, when you put it in 5th gear it makes a loud whining noise. what could it be and how do you fix it? the rest of the gears sound fine.

Could be the synchro rings going out. does the whining happen in any other gears? I had the same problems in a zuk a few years back. The whine got bad in fifth and the shifter would vibrate a bit while in gear.

hope this helps.

tranny

the tranny sounds fine in 1st through 4th gear. it only makes the whining noise in 5th. we had to drive the truck about 200 miles to get home, didn't have any problems other than the noise.

does the whine get louder when you take the load off of the tranny or is it constant?

would still put my money on the sunchro rings.

when you take the load off the noise quietens down, and gets louder the faster you go.

just got it home. It will probably be the weekend before I can go over it good. where is the plug to check the fluid, driver or passenger side. will change all the fluids this weekend, tranny, transfer, and engine. also check the diff's. where can I find specs for the fluids online?

mine started the same way with just 5th gear. now, 2 years later, it does it in all gears except 4th (perhaps has something to do with 1:1 ratio?), the higher the gear, the louder the noise. you can really only hear it good in 3rd and 5th gear. all gears function properly still. i changed the tranny and transfer fluid back when it first happened. it didn't fix anything. but, like i said, 2 years later, still no problem with driving, and the noise hasn't seemed to get any worse in a long time.
