Tranny heat?

Sometimes when I drive, the shifter sticks get pretty hot, the 4wd shifter (hotter of the two) can even get too hot to touch for more than a second.
This happens intermittently. Sometimes it will be a HOT day and they'll stay nice cool/warm on a whole 200mi trip, and sometimes it can be a cold day and they'll heat up within 15min of driving. In both instances I know there is plenty of fresh oil in the transmission. The truck has 220k mi on it, but is there anything I should do here or is that normal? Tranny runs perfectly fine as far as I can tell.

Pretty normal to get hot. Best thing I found was to install some synthetic gear oil. Took the temps down ~15 degrees F or so:

Before I could barely touch the hot shifters, now they are still hot, but I can touch them for an extended period of time.
