ok so i was trying to get to my power steering to tighten the belt.. from the top its kinda cramped so i tried to go from the bottom..

i took off my skid plate and found what looks like a tranny cooler but as big as a rad... i though it could be for ac but i already have a small condenser by my rad..


if it is a tranny cooler is it a stock toyota one???

being a automatic diesel i was going to install a tranny cooler but i may already have one...

o yea and i cant get to the bottom on the engine because of this so ill have to squeeze my hands in to get the the steering pump

I disagree, I have seen the South American and German models (TARO) have a transmission cooler there, just behind the skid plate on auto equipped diesels.

See if there are rubber lines coming off of it, that then goto the right frame rail and back to the trans, then you'll know for sure. <*I love this new smiley!

{Edit} Just saw you posted diesel and auto, duh..enough said to prove my point.

i know.. but thats a good thing.. now i dont have to worry when i tow my suzuki..

ive never had a automatic before this and i LIKE IT!!! even though a 5spd would make for a "faster diesel"

you sure on that one partner. seems kinda huge for the ac condensor my other 4runner doesnt have one there or that big.. and there is 1 by my rad...
didnt get a chance to change the oil and follow the pipes yet

 

It would be pretty easy to tell based on where the line come from and go to on it. It seems pretty dang big to be a transmission cooler; when I heard you had a turbodiesel I thought about an intercooler but I don't see any large pipes plugging into it.

Could it be the A/C condenser had to be relocated to allow for the intercooler in front of the radiator?

 

the tranny cooler in these trucks is in the bottom of the rad. that looks like the A/C condensior. mastacox why would a n/a engine need an intercooler?

 

just trace the lines, or crack it open if you hear gas coming out close it real quick. it isn't rocket surgery j/k!

 

As he said in his sig, it's a 1991 HILUX SURF SSR-X turbo diesel which tells me it has an intercooler somewhere. It's posible the A/C condenser had to be relocated to the site pictured because the engine's intercooler takes up the spot an A/C condenser would normally go.

 

its a turbo diesel no intercooler..

ill check tommorow in the day light if i can find/tace the lines without removing the skid again... i hope its a tranny cooler so i dont have to install one

 

Well I would definitely trace the lines to see if you are attached to the A/C compressor. That really doesn't look like a transmission cooler unless someone adapted an A/C condenser to be used as one... It looks like a nice factory mount too.

If you're unable to trace the lines, just turn on your A/C with the engine idling for a few minutes (the engine and transmission should be cold). If that thing gets hot, it's definitely the A/C condenser.

 

Just follow the lines. I usualy the trany coolers are inside the radiators or on a small external cooler.

 

pop the hood and follow the ac lines to the front if its equiped with a/c you're gonna see the hardlines running to the front.

 

pretty sure it's the a/c condenser. I've got a Surf as well and the first time i noticed it was when i installed my ARB bumper. I thought it might be an intercooler, but after looking around on the Aussie site from what i can tell...it's the a/c condenser.
