Steering Assist Question

I have an 88 toyota pickup with stock power steering (no modifications)

I just bought this Rock Assault Steering Pump Kit from LCEngineering:

I'm a little confused about what exactly I need to do to install this kit. I'm not going full hydro, my truck is IFS. Do I need to put holes in my steering gear box? Or can I just install the new pump and hook up all the hoses in place of the stock hoses?

not sure since i don't run an assist, but i think you need to tap the steering box.

You will need to tap your box. Some companies can sell you a tapped box for 350ish.

Ive never heard of assist on IFS but I did give it a think a while back and I dont think it should be done. i dont think the components can take it. Assist is generaly installed on a crossover hysteer on a solid axle. Which is not only made up of MUCH stronger components but the general design is stronger. IFS steering is not lined up. Especially if you are lifted (aka /-\). One of the keys with hydro is keeping everything lined up.

I was under the impression that you could install this kit on IFS trucks to get more powerful steering because the description says:

Pump kit is designed to work with stock or ram drilled IFS power steering boxes.

So does that really mean you have to drill both IFS and stock power steering boxes? Or does it mean you can use the kit with or without ram drilled power steering boxes?

Sorry if these are dumb questions

Ah. I see the confusion.

Most solid axle swapped trucks use an IFS steering box, as it allows for use of high steer.

You can certainly add this to your truck. However, Be prepared for idler arm replacements, as well as tie rod ends, depending on how hard you wheel it.

Yes, you need to drill out your steering box, that is how the ram will know which way to go. You will probably want to replace your stock PS pump too. The ram will be sucking in a lot of extra oil, and you'll need something that can supply it with enough juice.

This is pretty sweet. Let us know how it goes, as this could be a sweet addition to an IFS rig depending on how often you are destroying the steering. If not much at all, It may be worth it.

The kit I bought doesn't come with a ram. Do I have to get a ram in order to use the kit?

(I just wanted a more powerful power steering pump because my last two have sucked!)

Oh.

Your link didn't work for me, so I just looked it up online, and didn't see that there was an option for no ram.

In that case, You won't have to port anything. Just hook it up and go.

So you're saying that I can just hook up the new pump (that is more powerful) and just go? That is what I was planning on doing

...I wasn't planning on trying to put a ram on my IFS steering since like everyone has said, it would probably be a bad idea and be too rough on it

The porting is for the ram.

This is because the ram needs fluid, and needs to move in sync with the rest of the steering. It does that by using fluid from the steering box. What you are buying is a replacement pump and resevoir. It will function just like your stock pump, but have more pressure.

You can just hook up the input and return lines like normal, and away you go.

Awesome, thanks so much for the input. I was really worried that I had bought a kit that I couldn't put on my truck.

I did NOT want to buy another stock ps pump since I have never had one that actually worked

Stop!

Clear things up!

Is it a pump ? If it is then Its just a higher pressure and/or flow. If it is a hydro assist kit then you will need to tap your box and hook it up to the ram provided. Since the ram is missing, my guess its a pump that will provide more pressure to your current box, and it would also be a great pump for assist. Either way your box will work better. If you choose to add a ram, good luck on an IFS. DO NOT tap your box without a ram.

The pump is described as the "Rock Assault Steering Pump Kit" and it doesn't come with a ram so I assumed that it is just a pump.

Like you said I'm sure that it's a kit that would be good for hydro assist if one chose to go that route but I'm going to use it just as an aftermarket ps pump.

I'm not going to get a ram to put on the IFS so I will not drill/tap my box

Stock PS pump is about 1 gpm and 1300 psi

Pump you bought is 4 gpm and 1600 psi

The pump kit is for use in combination with a hydraulic steering kit and crossover steering on SFA or SAS vehicles.
