Starting Problem?

Cant figure it out, there are times when I go to start my 4runner, turn the key, all the indicator lights come on as normal, and it doesnt turn over,,,,I can hear the injector, but the starter doesnt even make a click...I found that when this happens, I am only getting 6 volts going to the starter, my battery is good, 12+ volts, my alternator is good, any ideas what would cause this? This doesnt happen all the time, just happens on occasion, I can push start it, or jump it without any problems when this happens.. any ideas?

From: Cincinnati, Ohio - Amelia is the exact place. There is no one else on this site from where I am. Seems like everyone is from Cali or Washington. I guess I need to move.

Hit your starter with a hammer a few times and then try to start it again.

If you are only getting 6 volts at the starter:

Then there is a wiring issue up stream of the starter, see below for some ideas:

If your only getting 6 volts to the starter, it sounds like there is a big voltage drop somewhere in the positive cable. Double check your connections at the positive terminal, if they are good, it somewhere in the cable thats giving you trouble. You could test the voltage drop on the cable, or just run a jumper cable from the starter to the positive cable to see if it fixes the problem when its acting up.

Thanks for the responses, I did run a hot wire from the positive post on the battery to the starter with the ignition key on, it started right up....let me ask you this, could the ignition switch be a cause of this? The ignition switch is kind of warn, I could start my 4runner with a knife or small flat object inserted into the key...thanks again

Read the page I posted above, the 2nd link. There are two pats of the igintion switch, the tumbler that the key fits in and the contacts themselves.

my truck was doing that too.

i found that if i took the disconnected the positive terminal and the reconnected it that it would start right up. i thought it was the ignition switch, but my starter solenoid went out.
