starting issues

I have a 91 Toyota pickup. All I get is a click when I turn it over. I replaced the starter, cleaned the grounds, changed the starter relay. It wont start with the start candle on and when I put the clutch pedal all the way down. I am out of ideas.

Proof read! Vocabulary!

I'm going to guess you mean "it doesn't turn over" when you say "when I turn it over." Start by putting your multimeter right on the battery to check voltage; static, and when someone turns the key. Same with the probes on the cable clamps (not battery posts). Then check voltage to ground at the solenoid wire (you can disconnect it for this test.)

If your tests lead you suspect the clutch start switch, check it: http://web.archive.org/web/201102052.../3bleeding.pdf Be careful not to spill any wax from the "start candle."

As I'm sure you've figured out by now, replacing the starter and the starter relay without diagnosing your problem was an expensive way to waste time.

A problem well-stated is a problem almost solved. What engine, transmission? (put it on your signature to save you and everybody else time).

1) Do as Scope13 says ^^^
2) AND check starter solenoid and starter motor function here.
3) AND Check if your starter relay is wired correctly... You can have the bestest, newest starter relay, and you could still have a problem because it may have been wired wrong at the factory, like these ones.

Start candle

you'll be called a spelling nazi for getting on that. really, how can you expect people who want help with their toyota to actually use english grammar to describe the problem so that it can be "seen" by those not actually at the location of the vehicle?

Red face

After years dealing with illiterate coworkers my brain just translates to what I hope they said.

Then with my 5th grade education I am by far the worst at spelling I keep my Websters always within reach.

With the quality of so called rebuilt starters it might be possible the Op added to the original problem by changing the starter .

I need to hunt for this Start Candle maybe that is my intermittent problem
