Starter quit workin' - contacts are good?

My starter took a crap on Monday, leaving me temporarily stranded until I could get help to rollstart it. I've searched and read the writeup on 4Crawler on the copper contacts inside the starter. Pulled my starter yesterday (took maybe 30 mins, not as bad as I thought it would be) and popped the cap off. The contacts hardly look worn. I'm gonna swing by Carquest for SVO parts and have them test the starter while I'm in there. Shouldn't the contacts display a lot of wear if they're the culprit?

One thing to note, and I feel stupid for tellin on myself, I thought my starter took a crap on me, replaced it with another good one I had layin around, 2 days later the problem came back... come to find out, it was a loose connection from the starter wire to the terminal (not the terminal to the battery)...

Hope you get it figured out, and yes, I would think contacts would show wear if they were worn out, I know alternator ones do, but I'm not 100% positive on starters.

The starter tested good at Carquest, so I'm confident that it's still good. I stuck my meter on the little wire that comes off the starter and I believe runs to the ignition switch, and when "cranking" it got 3.5 volts. This seems inadequate to me, so I'm replacing the ignition switch this afternoon. If that doesn't fix it, I guess I'll have to go through all the cables and wires.

Make sure it is grounded cleanly to the block/trans. More often than not this will make the starter "klick" when your contacts seem and are ok. You cant mount a starter to dirt/grease and have a complete circuit.

That's definitely something to try. I replaced the ignition switch and that didn't do a thing, so I'm kind of at a loss right now. My dad said he had a starter from my mom's old '92 Camry test good at the parts store, but it just wouldn't work on the car. Bought a new starter and it worked great. So, I dunno. I'll try the cleaning thing.
