I removed the starter on my 94 pickup today and upon installation and start up on my truck, I turned the key over and heard a click, then nothing. Whenever I removed my starter, it was extremely hard to get out, but I eventually gotit out; upon installation, I couldnt get it to line up, so I moved the flywheel gear a little bit to get it to line up. The relay and everything tests out good. Does my problem lie in my starter not being lined up right since I moved the flywheel gear a little bit? Please help! Thanks!

what do you mean when you say"moved the flywheel gear" you mean the flywheel itself? They shoudn't be touching when the starter is disengaged. Only when you go to start does the little gear on the started jump up and engages the flywheel.

 

The only gear that you can freely rotate by hand where the startes goes is what I rotated a little bit.

The flywheel gear and the starter gear shouldn't be touching when you install it. If they did that could be your problem but it seems unlikely. Normally when you give the starter power that little gear extends towards the flywheel. so when your running the starter doesn't spin all the time. Double check the wiring and fuses. I short a main fuse because I tried doing it with the battery still connected and the main wire touched the frame. Lots of sparks.

Alright sounds good, I will check that. Just another real quick question for you, how easily should the starter go into the housing? Should it just go in will no effort or should it be hard to go in?

No it shouldnt matter where the flywheel is at. Was there a shim in the old starter that you forgot to install with the new starter??? It sounds to me that the gears of the flywheel and the starter are hitting each other, which means 1 of 2 things. You need a shim between the starter and the block OR the armature of the starter is stuck out...

 

did you test the starter??

 

Sure sounds like the pinion gear is "stuck" extended. Why did you remove the starter in the first place?

 

I'm going to tear off the starter again tomorrow and follow the recommendations on here. Hopefully I can find the issue. Thank you for all of your responses!

 

I removed it to replace the contacts inside because I was getting a clicking noise when trying to start my truck.

 

How would the starter armature or pinion gear get stuck open, especially considering I didn't even take that part of the starter apart? Am I missing something here?

 

Also I'd like to add that whenever I took my starter apart to replace the contacts, I don't remember seeing that little steel ball in there at all. Is that a possiblity of why it may not be working correctly?

 

Steel ball should be in there and the spring fits over it. But i believe the steel ball shouldn't be loose in there. I just replaced the contacts in my starter this weekend, and the steel ball wasnt loose, but i could see it was in there.
