SR5 instrument cluster differences

Is it my imagination , or are the numbers on the earlier dashes ( 84-86 or 87) different from the 88-89 dashes ? TIA !

I'm doing the SR5 conversion on my 89 4runner now. Didn't notice any odd numbers. Did you get the pressure sendind unit?

The SR5 combination meters have a tachometer, trip odometer, oil pressure gauge, volt gauge.

DLX/STD combination meters have no tachometer, and low oil pressure and low voltage "idiot" lights.

DLX,STD 84-88

SR5 ; TBO ; DLX,STD ----- W/TACHOMETER 84-88

DLX,STD ----- W/O(TACHOMETER) 89-95

SR5 ; DLX,STD ----- W/TACHOMETER 89-95

There's two different part numbers for those, depending on the combination meter manufacturer. I'm not sure if they're interchangeable.

83520 GAGE ASSY,OIL PRESSURE SENDER
83520-35031 ; DENSO
83520-55011 ; YAZAKI

I believe SR5 always have a Tach but they also came in deluxe and standard modules. Girlfriends 1992 Deluxe has exactly the same instrument set up as my 1993 SR5 both are extended cabs. The differences are she has the smaller tires with steel rims and I have the 31 tires on Aluminum rims. The other differences are that I have power windows / door locks and the sunroof. The deluxe has the fancy strip down the sides while I have the chrome on the wheel wells. Always bug her that the strip was real pricey. Neither vehicle has AC

Numbers appear on the earlier ones to be "fatter", for lack of a better term. At least they appear that way on the ones I've been looking at on ebay. Numbers on my plain jane 89 dash have a thinner outline. Or, am I just nuts !!??

DLX,STD

Yeah, that's what I said. There's only two types. "DLX,STD", and "SR5; TBO ; DLX,STD ----- W/TACHOMETER". That's what the two types are called.

The tachometer ONLY comes in the "SR5; TBO ; DLX,STD ----- W/TACHOMETER" type. Even if it's in a DLX/STD vehicle, it's still technically an SR5 combination meter/gauge cluster.

Which is why it's called an SR5 gauge cluster swap. Because the SR5 is always going to have it, NOT the DLX,STD!

Lets be a little more specific here.

Interchange is NOT 84-88.

Toyota made TWO different "Styles" of clusters with tachs for early trucks/4runners

A. 84-86, and B. 87-88 Truck/89 4Runner

89 4Runner and 89 Truck are NOT the same vehicle.

ALSO! The V6 88 Truck/88-89 4Runner clusters are NOT the same as the 4 Cyls. Tach will not read correctly.

So to answer the OP's question directly yes, the 84-86 Clusters are indeed different than the 87-88 (+89 4Runner) clusters.

Thanks ! Thats what I wanted to know. Now IIRC, on here, there was a thread about how to adjust the V6 INSTRUMENT PANEL to read correctly for the 4 banger , but can't find it now .

Not totally correct. They're not entirely different, and in fact are actually VERY similar.

What I've stated comes directly from the Toyota EPC(Electronic Parts Catalog). It's completely accurate. There are only minor differences between the individual instruments/gauges in the clusters catagorized by year as I've stated. Other than that the clusters are nearly indentical parts wise from 84-88(+89 4Runner), respective to their being SR5(w/tachometer)or not. You can interchange entire 84-86 with the 87-88 gauge clusters, and even interchange most parts between the combination meter cases. As for as the tachometers not reading correctly, that's adjustable by an on-board potentiometer.

From the diagrams found in the EPC(links to the unadultered versions below):

so on the 1st gen clusters, there is a stock potentiometer to adjust? like lets say I have a 22re and buy a "4cyl gauge cluster" off ebay and its actually a V6 cluster, i can pry the cluster apart and adjust something inside? Any info would be great. Thanks in advance

I'm bumping this thread because I have questions along these lines. I just got my hands a SR5 cluster for my 1st gen 4Runner (thanks Swimmerboy!). It's a V6 cluster, and I have an I4, but I was assuming I could adjust the potentiometer, is that in fact not the case? If not, I can still adjust the tach as Terrys87 did here (post #478):
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f199...9/index20.html
However, I'd rather adjust the pot if possible.

Either way, my other question is: how the heck do I get the gauges out of the housing? I want to remove the tach to mess with the pot and the speedo to mess with the odo to match the mileage in my truck currently. But I can't do either until I can get the darn things out! The exploded views above make it look so easy.
