Speedometer/Odo stopped working.

Yes i searched, and all ive been able to find is stuff on newer trucks where it has to do with wiring.

my 86 pickup speedometer/odometer stopped working about a week ago, and i need to get it working again.

i was looking through the fsm, and found out where in the transfer case the gear is, but is it just a cable that gets loose? gears worn out in the xfer case?

anyone have any knowledge on what i need to replace?

Not sure if your 86 is like a 92 3.0 but mine quit and it turned out the be the speedo cluster went bad. $400 later it was fixed.

You can pull the gear end of the cable from the t-case and see what it looks like. If OK, then see if the cable is broken or not. Pull the speedo end off and see if the gear turns the speedo end of the cable.

by the time i got all the wiring done, interior put back together it was 1:30 and was rdy for bed, so i didnt have a chance to check out the speedo cable(note to self:dont start working on your truck at 10:30 at night after a day of school/work )

I pulled the cable, hoping this is the correct one right?

it spins freely, feels lubed, i followed the cable up to where it goes in the cab, and nothings kinked/broken? i have to be at work in a bit, so ill pull the dash tomorrow and check the back of it and see if anythings wrong.

Yep, that is the one. What you need to see is if you spin that end, does the other end spin. If the inner cable is broken someplace you'll be able to turn that end but the speedo end won't turn.

Just yank the whole cable out and see if it's broken.

well i yanked it all apart just now, and found what i would think to be the culprit.

the weak@$$ heat guard around it, is dried up, and with the speedo cable wedged right against the exhaust manifold, i guess it got melted, and dried up.

the tcase side spins freely, the dash input side, wont spin even with a pair of needle nose pliers trying to get it to move. as i was taking the cable out from underneath i could hear it cracking, and noticed the part right by the manifold.

well im off to toyota tomorrow afternoon to pick up some seals and o rings for my hubs, might as well see if they have a cable.

dealership wanted $75 for a cable, so im just gonna go to the junkyard this weekend, and try and find one for cheap, hell i might be selling this truck soon. no need to spend 75 on a speedo cable

I have and 86 4runner and when I pulled the speedo cable, the end on mine looked different. I didn't have any gears; it just looked like the end of the cable. Could that mean that the end broke off and is now somewhere in the tranny?

The gear is attached to the part that is still in the trans. You can unbolt it with a 12mm socket. Replace the oring if you pull it apart
