Spare tire moved from underneath to rear
Hi there just found this forum and it looks great.
I have a question.
Right now i have a '95 4runner. I am interested in moving the spare tire from the bottom to the rear.
I have noticed that a couple years earlier the toyotas came with a rear spare tire gate rack setup.
Have you ever seen anyone put the older model rack on a newer 4runner?
Are there any companies that make a similar item?
I would like to move the tire to the rear so that i may have a full size spare.

As far as I know, only '90 and '91 4Runners had the swing-out tire carrier as an option, and I think I remember reading on here, in a previous thread, that there is a fairly large piece of metal welded to the inside corner of the body for reinforcement and weight distribution.
Or you could get a new bumper with a tire carrier on it.

Bump on this.
I found two 4runners in the yard and they both have swing away carriers. I can get all the stuff including the tailgate for at the most $250 and probably cheaper. I would appreciate hearing anyone's opinion on this project.
Questions are, do I really need the tailgate? I could just get the reverse lights moved to the bumper when I make the rear bumper. If I don't need the tailgate the price would drop by half or more.
Would I need to cut out the reinforcing plate from one of the wrecks or can I buy one from the dealer for a reasonable price? Maybe I could even make one up with a piece of flat steel?
IF I decide to get the factory one I will still be waiting until I make the bumper to install it.
Thanks for any thoughts.

The original tailgate has a fairly substantial latch plate smack in the middle of it.
You'd definitely have to address that area if you keep the newer tailgate. Also, the older tail gate is recessed around the latch plate so you might have alignment issues using the newer tailgates.
There is some good info on factory tire carrier swaps on this thread as well:

I have searched on this quite a bit and have had my Toyota parts guy send me two faxes and he still can't find the internal brace. The one that has to be welded in place and supports the hinges. I have told him the whole story and he is looking it up as a 1990 or 1991 and still hasn't found it.
Does anyone know the part number? I can't find it or am overlooking it.

I did this mod to my 94 a few years ago. The internal brace actually bolts in from the inside behind the taillight. I went to the dealer and had them bring up the schematic for a 91 and ordered the part. The hard part was getting access to where the brace was to be located. I had to hack out a good deal of metal (dremel) just so I could get access to the area behind the tail light. I had a friend weld a small brace back in to replace the area I had to remove but the tire carrier brace bolted up pretty easily and allowed me to line up the holes for the tire carrier.
I bought the tire carrier from someone on ebay and he had the bracket (which also bolts onto the tail gate). The reverse lights do need to be relocated. I saw a picture of a Hilux from the UK that had integrated reverse lights into the standard tail lights and would like to try to add those some day if possible, just haven't had the time to locate the UK parts etc... The post 91 tailgate has the reverse lights directly behind where the tire will be placed. A pre-91 tailgate has an insert of roughly the same size as the post 91 w/out the reverse lights but I didn't have that piece and I had to "mod" (dremel) the existing insert (mostly just cutting a small notch in the plasti-chrome piece above the reverse lights) to allow the tire carrier latching plate to attach to on the post 91 tail gate.
Hope that helps, it definitely helped with ground clearance once I removed the old trailer hitch and the old bumper. I also like the looks with the 32" MT/Rs.
I'd take a new picture, but i ran into a little ice yesterday on a trial nearby. My truck slid backward about 25 feet right into my friends very stout new winch bumper'd rubicon. Needless to say, I'm in the market for a new tailgate now.

From what I know so far it shouldn't be too hard if you can use a drill etc. Most people seem to get a professional to weld in the brace. That is if they can get one. I say all this without completing the project though so there may be some hidden surprises.

look thru the old posts someone just last wek sent me a message that they had one for sale but i got another one so i told him i was not needing one anymore and if you dont find it when i get my new one on ill be willing to sell my other one cheap but it will need some work since a delivery truck bumped into my tire and mashed it up a bit but i think a good body man could make it work again insurance company just bought me a new one instead of fixing this one its from a 90 4 runner not sure if theres a differace in size butsure its not anything to major

I am actually thinking of a dual battery box. I have some super heavy battery cable from when I used to work for the school bus shop. I am wanting to find a use for it before someone steals it and sells it for the scrap copper. It is WAY to heavy to make jumper cables out of.
Come on guys still no help on the brace part number? I didn't call the dealer today, I thought I would give him the day off from 4Runner parts.
